Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Unveils Comprehensive 10-Year Progress Report
In a significant political announcement, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan released the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's detailed 10-year progress report on Monday. The event took place at a news conference in Kannur, where Vijayan presented data claiming that approximately 97% of the 900 promises made in the 2021 election manifesto have either been fully implemented or are in the final stages of completion.
Substantial Achievements in Housing and Land Rights
Vijayan highlighted several key accomplishments, emphasizing the government's focus on social welfare and infrastructure. Under the LIFE Mission, the administration has completed five lakh houses, providing secure shelter for thousands of families. Additionally, the Punargeham scheme has delivered 2,782 houses and 738 flats specifically to fisher families, addressing their unique housing needs.
Over the past decade, the government has granted land titles to 4,56,689 families, resolving long-standing land disputes and ensuring property rights for marginalized communities. A landmark achievement is the lifting of 64,006 families out of extreme poverty, making Kerala the first state in India to reach this milestone. The enactment of the One House Protection Law further safeguards economically weaker families from house seizures.
Welfare Initiatives and Economic Development
The progress report outlines extensive welfare measures, including monthly assistance of Rs 100 to over 16 lakh housewives, support for orphanage inmates, and the establishment of a senior citizens commission. On the economic front, Kerala has secured the fifth position in NITI Aayog's Ease of Doing Business index, attributed to a favorable industrial climate and policy reforms.
The Right to Public Services Bill has institutionalized time-bound service delivery as a legal right. In employment, the government has made 3,13,200 appointments through the Public Service Commission (PSC), with increased age limits to broaden opportunities. The Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council has facilitated 2.66 lakh job opportunities, while the Connect to Workers scheme provided financial aid to 75,376 youth for self-employment ventures.
Infrastructure and Healthcare Advancements
Infrastructure development remains a priority, with the state contributing 25% towards the development of NH 66. Projects like the hill highway and coastal highway are advancing steadily. The ongoing construction of the Anakkampoyil tunnel road is set to transform connectivity in Wayanad, and the Vizhinjam port project aims for completion by 2028.
In healthcare, modern institutions such as the Institute of Advanced Virology have been established to enhance medical services. The government has also completed 178 houses for victims of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides in Wayanad, with remaining constructions underway.
Political Criticisms and Future Plans
Chief Minister Vijayan criticized both the Congress and BJP for opposing the proposed SilverLine project, accusing them of using it as a political weapon. Despite efforts to secure central approval, the project failed to gain sanction. However, the government is considering alternatives, including a high-speed rail corridor proposal.
Looking ahead, the assured pension scheme for government employees will be implemented from April, ensuring 50% of the last-drawn salary as pension. A dedicated police station for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) issues is also in the works, reflecting the administration's commitment to comprehensive governance and public service.
