Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Condemns Rebel Leaders for Aligning with UDF
In a sharp rebuke, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has come down heavily on three leaders-turned-rebels from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) who have decided to contest as independent candidates with backing from the United Democratic Front (UDF). The leaders include G Sudhakaran and T K Govindan, whom Vijayan accused of betraying the party and acting as tools in the hands of the opposition.
Vijayan's Remarks During News Channel Interview
Vijayan made these pointed remarks during a news channel interview on Friday. He asserted that these leaders chose to contest elections with UDF support specifically to weaken the CPM by joining hands with its political adversaries. "Such tendencies were not common in our party. It may be due to changes over time," he noted, highlighting a shift in party dynamics.
Rejection of Sidelining Allegations and Retirement Age Factor
Firmly rejecting allegations that veteran leader G Sudhakaran had been sidelined within the party, Vijayan stated that Sudhakaran had received the highest consideration within the CPM. He suggested that dissatisfaction may have arisen after the party congress decided to fix 75 years as the retirement age, a policy change that could have impacted senior members.
Vijayan revealed that he had attempted to contact Sudhakaran three times over the phone after reports of his exit surfaced, but all calls went unanswered, indicating a breakdown in communication.
Response to T K Govindan's Rebellion
Addressing the rebellion by Kannur party district secretariat member T K Govindan, Vijayan described Govindan's claim as strange. Govindan had argued that no one proposed his name for candidature in Taliparamba despite his long experience at the party's organizational level. "But it is not for oneself but for others to feel that the person is the right choice," Vijayan countered, emphasizing collective decision-making over individual aspirations.
Dismissal of Dissent Impact and Party Strength
Dismissing the potential impact of this dissent, Vijayan confidently stated that such moves would not cause even a scratch to the party. He underscored the resilience of the CPM, particularly in regions like Alappuzha, where he said the party exhibits extreme vigour and has not aligned with any deviationist tendencies to date.
"Same is the case for Kannur party and the stiff opposition to the move expressed by cadres in Malappattam reflects that," he added, pointing to grassroots support against the rebels.
Defense of Candidature and Party Machinery
Referring to the rebellion by V Kunhikrishnan, who is contesting as an independent candidate in Payyannur, Vijayan praised the party machinery there as a model for the entire country, citing its immense strength and broad public support.
He also defended the candidature of PK Shyamala in Taliparamba, asserting that she is a leader in her own right and not chosen merely because she is the wife of party state secretary M V Govindan. "She has her own identity," Vijayan stressed, highlighting her qualifications and independent stature within the party.
