Kerala Chief Minister's Key Aides Resign in Unprecedented Move Ahead of Elections
In a development that has ignited intense political discussion across Kerala, three of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's most trusted aides have been relieved of their official responsibilities just weeks before the government's term concludes. The General Administration Department (GAD) issued formal orders accepting resignation requests from CPM leader and chief minister's political secretary P Sasi, CM's private secretary and former Kozhikode MLA A Pradeep Kumar, and Vijayan's long-serving personal assistant V M Suneesh.
Unusual Timing Sparks Widespread Speculation
The simultaneous departure of these key figures at such a politically sensitive juncture has been viewed as extraordinary within both political and bureaucratic circles. Conventionally, members of a chief minister's personal staff continue in their roles until the completion of the government's full tenure. The timing—mere weeks ahead of elections—has prompted numerous questions about the underlying motivations behind these exits.
P Sasi, who was known for taking several crucial decisions, particularly regarding police matters, has been at the center of controversies recently. Serious allegations raised against him by former Nilambur MLA P V Anvar had placed him under significant scrutiny. A Pradeep Kumar and V M Suneesh were both considered pivotal figures within the CM's office, handling critical administrative functions and coordination roles that kept the government machinery running smoothly.
The Shadow of the Chief Minister Steps Away
Perhaps most notably, V M Suneesh had come to be regarded over the years as the chief minister's "shadow," maintaining a constant presence alongside Vijayan in both official and informal settings. From high-level cabinet meetings to international diplomatic visits, Suneesh's role was seen as integral to the daily functioning of the chief minister's office. His sudden withdrawal has therefore come as a particular surprise to observers who had grown accustomed to his ubiquitous presence.
The decision was formally based on requests submitted by all three individuals on March 17. However, the lack of official explanation has fueled widespread conjecture across Kerala's political landscape.
Political Theories and Official Silence
Questions are being raised about whether internal assessments or intelligence inputs regarding the electoral prospects of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) coalition may have influenced the timing of these resignations. There is also speculation that the move could represent a pre-emptive shift, with key individuals seeking to reposition themselves ahead of a possible change in government following the upcoming elections.
When contacted for clarification, a senior GAD official speaking on condition of anonymity stated that "such interpretations are largely speculative at this point, and there is no formal communication linking the decision to any political or electoral assessment." Neither the government nor the individuals concerned have publicly elaborated on the specific reasons behind their requests to step down from their influential positions.
The mass resignation of these three powerful aides creates an unusual vacuum within the chief minister's office during the critical final weeks of the government's term, leaving both administrative and political observers watching closely for further developments.
