Kerala Court Grants Bail to KSU Activists in Veena George Assault Case
The Thalassery sessions court in Kannur, Kerala, granted bail on Thursday to five members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) who were arrested on charges of allegedly attacking Health Minister Veena George at Kannur railway station on February 25. The court's decision came after Sessions Judge K T Nisar Ahammed observed that there was insufficient evidence to prove the accused were carrying weapons during the incident.

The arrested individuals include KSU Kannur district president Athul M C, along with members Akshay V V, Bithul Balan, Ahammed Yasin, and H Mubas. They were taken into custody while protesting against the minister over alleged medical negligence incidents in the state. The police apprehended the men from the crime scene, but the investigation team failed to recover any weapons from the location.
The KSU members faced charges under various sections of the law, including attempt to murder. According to the prosecution, the accused had unlawfully assembled and trespassed onto the railway station platform with the intent to kill the minister. However, the court noted that the accused were only carrying black flags during the protest, and the minister's wound report indicated that no weapons were used in the alleged attack.
Court's Observations and Bail Conditions
In granting bail, the court emphasized the lack of concrete evidence linking the accused to weapon possession. Judge Ahammed ordered the release of the five men on bail upon executing a bond of Rs 50,000 with two solvent securities. The accused have been instructed to appear before the investigation officer every Monday between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. as part of the bail conditions.
Additionally, the court issued a stern warning to the accused, prohibiting them from influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence during the ongoing investigation.
