Kerala Government Fast-Tracks Land Acquisition for Major Defence Industrial Park
In a significant move to bolster the state's defence manufacturing capabilities, the Kerala government has swiftly initiated land acquisition proceedings for a proposed Integrated Defence Industrial Park (IDIP) at Kuttichal near Kattakada. This development comes even as the model code of conduct remains in effect following the recent assembly elections, underscoring the administration's commitment to expediting the project.
Project Details and Strategic Importance
The proposed park, to be developed under the Kerala Space Park initiative, is planned across nearly 100 acres of land. It is expected to attract an investment of approximately Rs 1,000 crore and serve as a major hub for manufacturing defence-related products, components, and advanced tools. This initiative aligns closely with the Centre's push for indigenous defence production under the 'Make in India' campaign.
Sources indicate that the land acquisition process is being prioritized to ensure that preliminary works can commence soon after formal approvals are secured. The project is intricately linked to the proposed expansion of BrahMos Aerospace in the Kattakada region, which is set to significantly enhance defence manufacturing capabilities in Kerala.
Synergy with BrahMos Expansion
Recently, the state government approved the allotment of around 180 acres at Nettukaltheri for a new BrahMos missile production facility. This marks a pivotal step in positioning Thiruvananthapuram as a key defence manufacturing hub. The new unit will enable large-scale production of advanced missile systems and related strategic hardware, effectively complementing the proposed defence park at Kuttichal.
Officials associated with the project emphasize that these two initiatives are part of a broader ecosystem being developed in the district. "The defence industrial park is designed to attract ancillary units, startups, and global players in the aerospace and defence supply chain. After BrahMos expansion gets final clearance, it will act as an anchor, accelerating investments and job creation in the region," said a senior official involved in the planning.
