Kerala MLA Sudhakaran refuses to escalate verbal duel

Kottayam: Ambalappuzha MLA G Sudhakaran has stated that he is not interested in prolonging a verbal confrontation with Kuttanad MLA Reji Cherian. Speaking to reporters in Ambalappuzha on Monday, Sudhakaran clarified that he had not insulted anyone and would never do so. When questioned about his criticism of Cherian's visit to Thottappally, he refrained from commenting further and advised, “Check the rules and precedent.” He added that he had no grievances regarding the matter.

Background of the Dispute

Sudhakaran and Cherian engaged in a heated exchange on Sunday following Cherian's visit to the Thottappally spillway, located in the Ambalapuzha constituency. Sudhakaran claimed that Cherian did not inform him beforehand, which he deemed a breach of protocol.

During a public function, Sudhakaran asserted that an MLA should not enter another legislator's constituency or participate in official activities without prior notice. He warned that such actions could lead to scrutiny by the assembly's privileges committee.

Cherian's Response

In response, Reji Cherian defended his visit, stating that as the representative of Kuttanad, he had every right to inspect matters affecting his constituency. He explained that he visited the spillway alongside officials, including engineers, to evaluate its condition.

“I did not go there to remove sand. My intention was to understand the situation at Thottappally, which directly impacts Kuttanad during heavy rainfall,” Cherian remarked.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the two MLAs, but Sudhakaran's latest remarks suggest a desire to de-escalate the situation.
