LDF-Backed Candidate Addresses MLA's Campaign Absence in Thiruvananthapuram
In Thiruvananthapuram, the political landscape has been buzzing with speculation as LDF-backed independent candidate Sudheer Karamana has publicly addressed the notable absence of former minister and sitting MLA Antony Raju from active campaign events. Karamana has firmly clarified that there is no rift between them, despite ongoing political debate surrounding Raju's limited public appearances.
Social Media Support Versus Physical Presence
Speaking to the media, Karamana emphasized that Raju has expressed his support through a Facebook video appealing for votes. "Isn't social media more effective in terms of reach than direct appearances?" he questioned, highlighting the modern campaign strategies. He added that he met Raju in person, where the latter conveyed his difficulty in attending campaign events physically due to personal constraints.
However, Raju's decision to stay away from public campaigning for Karamana has put the Left Democratic Front (LDF) on the defensive. Political parties have reportedly been questioning the absence of the sitting MLA during crucial campaign phases, raising eyebrows about internal cohesion within the alliance.
Behind the Scenes: Candidate Selection Discontent
Raju, a leader of the Janadhipathya Kerala Congress and the sitting MLA from Thiruvananthapuram Central constituency, also skipped an LDF election convention held in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. Simultaneously, he shared a video message on the CPM district committee's Facebook page expressing support for Karamana.
Sources indicate that Raju's stance may be linked to dissatisfaction over candidate selection. He was reportedly unhappy after the Communist Party of India (Marxist) declined to field a candidate he had recommended, leading to tensions within the coalition.
Triangular Contest and Allegations
The issue has gained significant traction in the constituency, where a crucial triangular contest is underway. Senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan earlier alleged that CPM's decision to field a "weak candidate" in Thiruvananthapuram was part of a deal with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This allegation adds to the ongoing political tension, making the electoral battle even more intense.
Ethical Considerations and Legal Disqualification
In response to the criticism, Raju explained that his decision to stay away from direct campaigning was based on ethical considerations rather than protest. Having been disqualified by a court from contesting elections, he stated it would not be appropriate for him to publicly seek votes. He maintained that he continues to support Karamana through indirect means, including phone outreach to voters and digital messaging.
Raju won the Thiruvananthapuram seat in 2021, the only seat secured by the Janadhipathya Kerala Congress, and subsequently became a minister. Following his disqualification in a legal case, the CPM decided to field an independent candidate backed by the LDF instead of allotting the seat to his party. CPM's refusal to allow the party to contest under its own symbol has reportedly led to discontent within the Janadhipathya Kerala Congress, further complicating the political dynamics.
As the election approaches, the focus remains on how these internal issues will impact voter sentiment and the overall outcome in this key constituency.
