Kerala Opposition Leader Accuses CPM and BJP of 'Calculated Unholy Alliance'
In a significant political development, Opposition Leader V D Satheesan has leveled serious allegations against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, claiming a "clear and calculated unholy alliance" between the two rival political forces in Kerala. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Satheesan asserted that patterns of cross-voting and strategic candidate placements point toward a tacit understanding designed to undermine the United Democratic Front's electoral prospects.
Strategic Vote Splitting in Palakkad Stronghold
Satheesan emphasized that the impact of this alleged arrangement would be most evident in the Palakkad constituency, where he claimed deliberate efforts are underway to split UDF votes and facilitate a BJP victory. "In Palakkad, CPM fielded a candidate not to win, but to divide UDF votes. This is a calculated move to help the BJP candidate secure victory," he alleged. The opposition leader described Palakkad as a traditional Congress stronghold where BJP typically finishes second and CPM trails third—a trend reflected in recent byelections.
Questionable Candidate Allocations Raise Suspicion
The Congress leader raised pointed questions about BJP's candidate selection strategy, noting that the national party has ceded seats to smaller allies like BDJS and Twenty20 even in constituencies where these parties lack organizational presence. "Beyond one or two constituencies in eastern parts of Ernakulam, where else does Twenty20 have a presence in Kerala? Yet, they have been given seats far beyond their strength," Satheesan questioned, suggesting this indicates a deeper understanding between CPM and Twenty20.
He further alleged that "weak candidates have been deliberately fielded in several constituencies to ensure CPM victories," creating a reciprocal arrangement where BJP would extend support to CPM in other constituencies. Satheesan told media outlets that there is a "strong possibility" of CPM-BJP cross-voting occurring across multiple constituencies.
Confident UDF Response and Rejection of Criticism
Despite these allegations, Satheesan expressed unwavering confidence in UDF's electoral prospects. "Nothing will happen to UDF in Palakkad. We will win the seat with double the margin secured in the last byelection," he asserted. Looking at the broader picture, he predicted that UDF was poised for a decisive return to power, stating "We will secure more than 100 seats and form the government."
Addressing criticisms about delays in candidate announcements, Satheesan defended UDF's process, noting that the front finalized seat-sharing without any discord and accommodated all constituents. "UDF and Congress completed the announcement of all 140 candidates in the state at the fastest pace in their history," he stated, emphasizing that the seat-sharing process reflected the true spirit of "Team UDF."
Structured Candidate Selection Process
Satheesan explained that unlike CPM, Congress follows a structured hierarchical process for candidate selection. "State leadership submits the list to the screening committee chaired by Madhusudan Mistry in Delhi, after which the central election committee, comprising Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, takes the final decision," he detailed. He acknowledged that while the party was ready with 50 candidates on the first day, Mistry's health-related travel delays caused a brief postponement, with the first list released within 48 hours thereafter.
Media Criticism and Internal Unity
The opposition leader criticized sections of the media for what he called a lack of propriety in reporting, asking journalists to review their own contradictory reports. He specifically cited instances where media outlets reported that K Sudhakaran and Adoor Prakash would contest elections, followed by reports that they wouldn't—asserting that no such decisions had been made in Delhi at the time. "The narrative of 'delay' in candidate selection was media-generated and not based on any statement from party leaders," Satheesan stated, accusing the media of attempting to portray internal discord within Congress.
He firmly denied reports suggesting he would resign as opposition leader if Sudhakaran was fielded, reinforcing the message of internal unity and coordinated strategy within the United Democratic Front as Kerala approaches crucial elections.
