Kerala Political Row Intensifies Over Alleged CPM-SDPI Links

The political controversy surrounding alleged connections between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) escalated significantly on Sunday, as the Congress party launched a vigorous offensive. Congress leaders specifically pointed to constituencies including Vengara and Mankada, claiming these areas highlight the purported understanding between the two parties.

Congress Alleges Direct Involvement of Chief Minister

Congress leaders have made serious allegations that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan personally intervened to forge an understanding with the SDPI. On Sunday morning, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala reiterated these claims, stating there is an "open understanding" between CPM and SDPI in Kerala and directly implicating Vijayan in the matter.

CPM's Forceful Rejection of Allegations

In Kasaragod, CPM general secretary M A Baby categorically dismissed the charges, referring to them as a 'Kanugolu capsule' – a pointed reference to election strategist Sunil Kanugolu, who is currently advising the Congress party's electoral strategy. Baby accused the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) of outsourcing its campaign narrative and attempting to create confusion among voters through these allegations.

"CPM and LDF did not hold such talks with the party (SDPI) or accept its support," Baby asserted during his media address. "We all know it is impossible to track voters to polling booths and determine whom they voted for."

Vijayan's Response to UDF Charges

Addressing the media in Malappuram, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also refuted the UDF's allegations. He emphasized that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has consistently maintained an uncompromising stand against all forms of communalism. However, he did not directly clarify whether LDF would publicly reject any support extended by SDPI during the elections.

Vijayan stated that the UDF is banking on lies rather than facts, adding that "CPM's stand towards all communal forces is the same, be it majority communalism or minority communalism."

Baby's Detailed Clarification on SDPI Stance

M A Baby provided further clarification on the party's position regarding SDPI, describing the organization as a 'product of RSS' and urging it to reconsider its political stance. He explained that if SDPI chooses to take a position based on its own assessment, it is for that party to declare it publicly.

"If we needed their votes, we would have held talks," Baby stated. "There is no question of engaging politically with organizations based on communal ideology."

He added that if SDPI makes decisions based on its previous political experiences, then it is entirely up to them to declare their intentions and actions.

Vijayan's Final Word on Communalism

When specifically questioned about SDPI's potential support, Vijayan redirected such inquiries to the SDPI itself. "You should go and ask them about what you hear. Asking me won't lead to any understanding," he responded. "We have no connection with any form of communalism."

The political confrontation comes at a crucial time in Kerala's electoral landscape, with both major fronts positioning themselves on issues of secularism and communal politics. The exchange highlights the intense competition and strategic maneuvering characteristic of Kerala's vibrant political arena.
