Kochi District Collector Mandates Strict Green Protocol for Upcoming Assembly Elections

In a proactive move to ensure environmentally sustainable electoral practices, a crucial meeting was convened in Kochi under the leadership of District Collector G Priyanka. The gathering, which included printers, dealers, and various stakeholders, focused on rigorously implementing green protocols in preparation for the upcoming legislative assembly elections.

Complete Ban on Prohibited Campaign Materials

Collector Priyanka emphasized the Election Commission's directive to enforce the green protocol throughout the campaign period. She issued clear instructions to completely avoid all prohibited campaign materials, including flex boards, PVC banners, and non-woven polypropylene boards. These items are known to contribute significantly to environmental pollution and waste accumulation.

The collector clarified that only recyclable polyethylene campaign materials, which have been approved by the Kerala Pollution Control Board, should be used for printing. Furthermore, all such prints must mandatorily include specific markings: PVC-free and recyclable logos, the manufacturer's name, registration number, and the pollution control board's certificate number or a scannable QR code for verification purposes.

Enhanced Enforcement and Inspection Measures

To ensure compliance, enforcement squads have been directed to immediately remove all existing boards made with prohibited materials. Inspections by these squads will be intensified at both the district and local self-government levels. Additionally, anti-defacement squads, formed to monitor the legality of election campaign activities, will conduct thorough inspections across the region.

Inspections focusing specifically on printing units within the district will also be strengthened. Collector Priyanka warned that strict action will be taken if any use of prohibited materials is detected, underscoring the seriousness of the initiative.

Broad Participation in the Meeting

The meeting saw participation from a diverse group of stakeholders, including District Sanitation Mission Coordinator Sheetal G Mohan, sign printers and dealers from the district, office-bearers of various organizations, and representatives from institutions. This collaborative approach aims to foster widespread adherence to the green protocol, ensuring that the election campaign is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.

This initiative reflects a growing commitment to integrating sustainability into electoral processes, setting a precedent for future elections in the region and beyond.
