Kochi Corporation Meeting Erupts in Chaos as LDF Councillors Demand Mayor's Resignation
A statutory council meeting of the Kochi corporation on Friday descended into tense and disruptive scenes as councillors from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) staged a vehement protest. The opposition members demanded the immediate resignation of Mayor V K Minimol, citing an ongoing vigilance inquiry into a corruption complaint against her.
Protest Disrupts Proceedings with Placards and Banners
Shortly after the meeting commenced around 3 PM, LDF councillors gathered near the well of the council chamber, raising placards and banners to voice their demands. A prominent black banner displayed by the protesters boldly declared, 'corrupt mayor should resign'. Amid the loud disruptions and visible unrest, Mayor Minimol proceeded to quickly read out routine resolutions. These included an appreciation for officials, with a highlight that the corporation had secured the top rank in the state for plan fund utilization. The agenda was passed swiftly despite the ongoing protests, underscoring the charged atmosphere.
LDF Secretary Reiterates Demand, Alleges Irregularities
Speaking to reporters after the tumultuous meeting, LDF parliamentary party secretary P J Yesudas firmly reiterated the demand for Mayor Minimol's resignation. He emphasized that merely returning allegedly collected money does not negate the offence. Yesudas further alleged irregularities in the awarding of works related to the Indira Canteen project, adding another layer to the controversy.
Root of the Controversy: Vigilance Court Order for Probe
The controversy traces back to an order issued last month by the enquiry commissioner and special judge (vigilance) in Muvattupuzha. This directive called for a probe based on a complaint filed by B B Ajayan. The complaint alleges that Mayor Minimol, while serving as a councillor, collected money from local residents for road restoration work. Although the amount was later returned and no case was initially registered, the court observed a critical point: a public servant cannot personally collect money for public works. The court noted that repayment does not eliminate potential criminal liability, keeping the legal scrutiny active.
Mayor Dismisses Allegations as Baseless and Politically Motivated
In response to the allegations and protests, Mayor V K Minimol dismissed them as entirely baseless and politically motivated. She accused the LDF and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of orchestrating a campaign to defame her. Minimol stated that she has not received any court summons regarding the matter and questioned the bribery claim. She pointed out that the money in question was received through a bank account and that all discussions were officially recorded, suggesting transparency. The mayor further announced her intention to pursue legal action against those spreading what she termed false information.
The incident highlights deepening political tensions in Kochi, with the vigilance probe casting a shadow over the mayor's tenure and sparking fierce debates on accountability and public service ethics.
