Kochi Mayor's Social Media Initiative Ignites Political Debate

A significant political controversy has erupted in Kochi following the decision by Mayor V K Minimol to open an official social media account dedicated to promoting the corporation's various initiatives and sharing detailed information about local body projects. The move, while approved by the LDF opposition, has reopened old political wounds regarding similar attempts during previous administrations.

Historical Context and Political Hypocrisy Allegations

Though the current LDF opposition has formally approved Mayor Minimol's social media account initiative, they have launched sharp criticism against the UDF for what they characterize as hypocritical behavior. During the tenure of former mayor M Anilkumar, UDF councillors had vehemently objected to similar proposals, arguing against using corporation funds for what they then described as "public relations works for the mayor."

Mayor Minimol clarified the historical precedent, stating: "The state government had previously given approval for starting a social media account for Anilkumar. Following that, the Kozhikode mayor too had raised a request for permission to open an official account. The government subsequently granted approval for spending up to Rs 5 lakh per year specifically for this purpose."

Opposition's Conditional Support

Opposition leader V A Sreejith offered a nuanced response to the current development. While welcoming Mayor Minimol's decision to establish the social media presence, he pointedly noted the political inconsistency: "During Anilkumar's stint, UDF councillors had declared they would not agree to spending corporation money for what they characterized as a move to conduct public relations works for the mayor. However, we are genuinely pleased that the current mayor is also opening a social media account to enhance public communication."

Councillor M G Aristotle provided additional context, explaining that the UDF's original objection was specifically against creating a new account in the personal name of Anilkumar rather than establishing it under the official title of "mayor." This distinction has become central to the ongoing political debate about appropriate use of public resources for official communication channels.

Expanding Digital Infrastructure

The controversy unfolded during Thursday's council meeting, which also approved the procurement of a new official vehicle for the mayor. Beyond the immediate social media account approval, Mayor Minimol revealed more ambitious digital plans, stating that the corporation will actively explore possibilities for launching an official YouTube channel. This expanded platform would enable all councillors to utilize digital media for public engagement and information dissemination.

Councillor V P Chandran emphasized the importance of inclusive access, requesting that specific measures be implemented to ensure the social media platforms prove genuinely useful for all councillors, not just the mayoral office. This reflects growing recognition of digital tools as essential components of modern municipal governance and public accountability.

The debate highlights evolving attitudes toward digital governance in Kerala's urban administration, where social media platforms are increasingly viewed as legitimate tools for public communication, despite persistent political disagreements about funding mechanisms and implementation protocols.
