Kochi: The city police investigating the attack on two women in Kaloor by a 10-member gang have arrested the prime accused, Akbar Ali, on Saturday. Ali was apprehended from Palakkad with the assistance of Cherpulassery police. The accused had been living out of his car to evade arrest. Police sources revealed that Ali was attempting to modify his vehicle when he was spotted by authorities.
Ali was trying to leave the state, but his phone was traced to Cherpulassery, leading to his capture. He is expected to be brought to Kochi by Saturday night. The attack occurred in Kaloor around 4:30 am on Tuesday, while the complainant and her friend—both students preparing for government recruitment exams—were walking along Chakkalapadam Road to have tea. The gang encountered them near a tea stall. The group reportedly questioned why they were out so early and then made obscene gestures at the complainant’s friend.
When the complainant confronted them, an argument ensued. As she began recording the incident on her mobile phone, Akbar snatched the phone, smashed it, and assaulted the girl. The police are continuing their investigation to apprehend the remaining members of the gang.
