Kochi Anti-Defacement Squad Intensifies Crackdown on Unauthorised Campaign Materials
In a decisive move to preserve the integrity of the electoral process, the anti-defacement squad in Ernakulam district has executed a significant clean-up operation, removing a total of 4,881 unauthorised campaign materials. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election by preventing the defacement of public spaces and curbing illicit publicity activities.
Friday's Major Clearance Drive
On Friday alone, the squad demonstrated remarkable efficiency by clearing 1,675 unauthorised items from various locations across the district. The breakdown of the removed materials includes:
- 1,357 posters from political parties
- 226 banners that violated regulations
- 92 other campaign boards and displays
These actions underscore the squad's commitment to maintaining visual order and adhering strictly to electoral guidelines.
Public Engagement Through cVIGIL App
Election Commission officials have actively encouraged citizen participation in reporting violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The public can utilise the cVIGIL mobile application or send emails to mccernakulam2026@gmail.com to submit evidence of infractions.
Citizens are empowered to upload photos or videos of any violations, enabling prompt and effective action by authorities. This collaborative approach has already yielded substantial results, with 517 complaints received via the cVIGIL app on Friday. Impressively, action was taken on 516 of these complaints, highlighting the system's responsiveness.
District-Level Vigilance and Compliance
The anti-defacement squad, constituted at the district level, has been conducting rigorous inspections throughout Ernakulam. Their proactive efforts aim to ensure strict compliance with the MCC, which governs campaign conduct to prevent undue influence and maintain public decorum.
By removing unauthorised materials and leveraging technology for public reporting, the squad is setting a precedent for electoral transparency. This ongoing vigilance is crucial as the election period progresses, with officials reiterating their dedication to upholding democratic principles and fostering a clean electoral environment.
