Kochi Faces Water Crisis as Metro Work Damages Pipeline Twice in Days
Kochi Water Supply Hit by Consecutive Pipeline Bursts

Residents of Kochi are grappling with a severe water shortage after two consecutive bursts in a major pipeline within days, both linked to ongoing Metro construction work. The incidents have disrupted supply to key areas of the city, prompting public protests and urgent repair efforts by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA).

Metro Piling Work Triggers Dual Pipeline Disasters

The crisis began on Thursday night when a crucial 300mm pipeline, which carries treated water directly from the Aluva plant, burst near the Kochi Metro viaduct at Kaloor. As KWA officials were still arranging repairs for that initial damage, a second burst occurred at another point just a few yards away on Monday night.

The second rupture happened while piling work for the Palarivattom-Kakkanad Metro line was in progress, reportedly involving an earth mover. This back-to-back damage has severely hampered the authority's ability to restore normalcy quickly.

Widespread Disruption and Public Anger

The pipe failures have cut off drinking water supply to several densely populated neighbourhoods. Affected areas include:

  • Kaloor
  • Cheranelloor
  • Kadavanthra
  • Edappally

Frustrated by the prolonged inconvenience, Congress functionaries led by Uma Thomas blocked Banerji Road on Monday night. They demanded immediate action to restore supply. "People in several parts of the city are facing a water shortage following the back-to-back pipe bursts," Uma said. She accused the Metro agencies of working without adequate precautions, alleging that utility sketches are not being consulted, leading to such damaging incidents.

Repair Timeline and Official Response

KWA officials stated that repairing the first burst required a special clamp, expected to arrive by Monday night. Following the second incident, the repair window extended further.

District Collector Priyanka G visited the site to assess the situation. She provided a timeline, relaying KWA's assurance: "KWA has informed us that they would complete the repair of the first burst by Tuesday morning and the second by evening." The city now waits anxiously for these repairs to be completed, hoping for a swift return of regular water supply.
