Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Commits to Resolving Ex-Servicemen's Grievances
In a significant development in Madikeri, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner SJ Somashekar on Tuesday engaged with ex-servicemen, attentively listening to their grievances and demands. He provided firm assurances that their concerns would be addressed comprehensively, marking a proactive step towards supporting veterans in the district.
Key Demands Highlighted by Ex-Servicemen Association
Major General BA Kariappa (Retd), the district president of the Ex-Servicemen Association, articulated the pressing needs of veterans. He emphasized that ex-servicemen, many of whom have served in challenging high-altitude regions like Jammu and Kashmir, deserve minimum basic facilities as a recognition of their service.
The association highlighted several critical requirements:
- Extension of housing facilities to ensure dignified living conditions.
- Sanctioning of land and provision of proper land documents to secure property rights.
- Establishment of community halls to foster social cohesion and support networks.
- Inclusion of ex-servicemen in government functions to honor their contributions.
Several other ex-servicemen echoed these points, stressing the urgency of resolving long-pending land dispute cases and providing essential amenities.
Deputy Commissioner's Comprehensive Assurance
Somashekar responded with a detailed plan of action, assuring that all issues raised would be resolved. He committed to prioritizing land allocation for ex-servicemen, specifically for the construction of community halls, hospitals, and canteens for the association.
"Land will be reserved for the construction of ex-servicemen's community halls in Madikeri and Ponnampet," he affirmed, underscoring the tangible steps being taken.
Additionally, Somashekar confirmed that ex-servicemen would be invited to anniversary programs honoring FMKM Cariappa and General KS Thimayya, recognizing their legacy and service.
Systematic Grievance Redressal Mechanism
To ensure ongoing support, the Deputy Commissioner announced that tahsildars would be directed to hold ex-servicemen adalats once every two months. This initiative aims to provide a regular platform for veterans and their dependents to voice grievances and seek solutions.
Regarding land disputes, Somashekar stated that the issue of granting RTC (Record of Rights, Tenancy and Crops) to ex-servicemen occupying 'paisari' government lands would be examined. He further assured that he would request the government to relax rules concerning land provision for ex-servicemen, facilitating easier access.
Integration with Government Housing Schemes
In a move to align with broader welfare efforts, Somashekar revealed that discussions would be held with relevant parties to reserve land for ex-servicemen during the construction of houses under government schemes in the district. This integration aims to leverage existing programs for the benefit of veterans, ensuring they are not left behind in development initiatives.
This meeting signifies a renewed commitment from the Kodagu administration to address the welfare of ex-servicemen, with concrete promises that could significantly improve their quality of life and honor their sacrifices.
