Kolathur: The Tamil Nadu Constituency That's a Referendum on CM Stalin

Nestled in the northern part of Chennai, Kolathur is not the largest or wealthiest assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu. However, over the past 15 years, it has transformed into one of the most closely monitored political battlegrounds in the state. When voters head to the polling booths on April 23, they will not merely be selecting their local MLA; they will be casting a vote that serves as a direct referendum on Chief Minister M K Stalin's leadership and performance.

Stalin's Political Fortress and Growing Influence

Kolathur has been Stalin's political stronghold since 2011, when he moved from the Thousand Lights constituency and secured a comfortable victory. Over the years, this area has evolved into a showcase for the DMK's development initiatives, welfare schemes, and civic improvements. Simultaneously, Stalin has cultivated a deep personal connection with the electorate, consistently improving his electoral performance with each successive election.

His winning margin tells a compelling story: from a narrow 2,700 votes in 2011, it expanded significantly to 35,730 in 2016, and surged to an impressive 70,384 in 2021—one of the highest margins witnessed in Tamil Nadu's political history. DMK members are confident of another victory, but their focus is on enhancing this margin further. Even a slight decrease in Stalin's vote share could be interpreted as a decline in support for the DMK president, making every vote crucial.

Development and Infrastructure Upgrades in Kolathur

Over the past five years, the DMK government has undertaken a comprehensive makeover of Kolathur. Key projects include the establishment of 'Mudhalvar Padaipagams' (chief minister study centres), a new market, an ornamental fish centre, an air-conditioned bus stop, and a renovated Periyar Nagar tertiary hospital, alongside numerous new buildings. These efforts have significantly boosted local infrastructure and public amenities.

Residents have noted tangible improvements. Farhan Muheed, a Saudi Arabia-born MBBS graduate preparing for his master's at one of the study centres, remarked, "My perspective on government facilities changed entirely after visiting Kolathur." S Rajeswari, a retired accountant from Periyar Nagar, highlighted that water logging issues on the 70 feet road (Siva Elango Salai) have been resolved, while another local resident praised the enhanced facilities at the Periyar Nagar tertiary government hospital.

Opposition Challenges and Campaign Strategies

The principal opponent, AIADMK, is acutely aware of the formidable challenge it faces in Kolathur. Their candidate, Santhanakrishnan, has been vocal about local concerns, such as the poor upkeep of interior roads and persistent water logging in certain areas. In his campaigns, he frequently invokes the legacy of the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to rally support.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami launched a hard-hitting campaign in Kolathur recently, accusing Stalin of perpetuating dynastic politics and corruption. Adding to the opposition's efforts, TVK's V S Babu, a former DMK MLA from 2006 to 2011 who later joined AIADMK before switching to TVK, has also entered the fray. At 75, Babu claims that his extensive field experience, combined with actor Vijay's popularity, will help him challenge Stalin effectively.

DMK's Grassroots Mobilization and Electoral Confidence

Despite these opposition moves, DMK members believe they will have minimal impact in Kolathur. While Stalin engages directly with voters through roadshows and street interactions, DMK cadres are concentrating on grassroots mobilization to increase voter turnout. Their strategy is clear: it is not just about securing a victory, but about achieving a decisive and overwhelming margin that underscores Stalin's enduring popularity and the party's stronghold in the constituency.

As the election date approaches, all eyes are on Kolathur, where the outcome will not only shape local representation but also send a powerful message about the political landscape in Tamil Nadu.
