Massive Protest March in Kolhapur Targets Alleged Fake Caste Certificate Scam
In a significant demonstration of community outrage, former MLAs Sujit Minchekar and Rajiv Awale spearheaded a large-scale protest march in Kolhapur on Monday. The event, organized by the Scheduled Caste Reservation Protection Jan Andolan Samiti, drew a substantial crowd to the district collectorate, where participants voiced their demands for immediate action against individuals accused of exploiting the reservation system through fraudulent means.
Core Demands: Disqualification and Criminal Cases
The protestors presented a formal memorandum to District Collector Amol Yedge, calling for a rigorous crackdown on those who allegedly used fake scheduled caste (SC) certificates to contest local body elections in seats specifically reserved for the SC category. The allegations center on recent zilla parishad and municipal elections, where several individuals from other castes are said to have obtained counterfeit SC certificates to circumvent reservation laws.
Former MLA Sujit Minchekar, in a fiery address, singled out three local leaders for immediate disqualification. "We demand the immediate disqualification of Pattankodoli Zilla Parishad member Dargonda Basgonda Patil (also known as Mahesh Patil), Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation corporator Alka Swami, and Gadhinglaj Municipality Mayor Mahesh Mahadev Turbatmath," Minchekar declared. "Their certificates are fraudulent, and their elections must be nullified without delay."
Minchekar further insisted that criminal charges for cheating be filed against the accused. "The officials responsible for issuing these certificates without proper verification must be suspended and subjected to a thorough investigation. Additionally, the assets of these individuals should be scrutinized to uncover any illicit gains," he emphasized, highlighting the need for accountability at all levels.
March Details and Emotional Appeals
The protest commenced at Bindu Chowk, with participants donning blue caps and scarves and carrying blue flags as symbols of their cause. The procession wound its way through Dasara Chowk and Venus Corner before culminating in a public rally outside the Collector's Office, where community leaders delivered impassioned speeches.
KMC corporator Durvas Kadam addressed the gathering, stressing the constitutional importance of reservation. "The Constitution guarantees our participation in the political process through reservation. By obtaining fake certificates, these individuals are committing a grave injustice against genuine scheduled caste candidates. Only stringent action can protect the integrity of our democratic system," Kadam asserted.
Former Congress MLA Rajiv Awale delivered an emotional speech, reflecting on the historical struggles of the community. "We have endured decades of caste-based violence; our caste is our identity, not a tool for others to exploit. Those who produce fake certificates have never faced the hardships we have. They must not be allowed to steal our opportunities," he said, evoking strong sentiments among the attendees.
Allegations of Administrative Complicity
The rally attracted a large turnout of activists and community leaders, including RPI (A) district president Uttam Kamble, who alleged administrative involvement in the fraud. "How can people with no connection to our community suddenly become scheduled caste? This occurred with the connivance of administrative officers. We will not tolerate this theft of our constitutional rights," Kamble stated, calling for a probe into possible collusion.
The protest underscores growing concerns over election integrity and reservation misuse in Maharashtra, with participants vowing to continue their agitation until concrete steps are taken to address the alleged certificate forgery and ensure justice for the SC community.
