Kolhapur Village to Stage Justice March Over Temple Priest Assault
Residents of Parite village in Karvir tehsil of Kolhapur district are organizing a significant 'justice march' to the district collectorate on Monday. This protest action is a direct response to a violent incident involving priests from the revered Jyotiba temple who were reportedly involved in a physical altercation with devotees. The villagers are demanding immediate and decisive action against the implicated priests.
Core Demands of the Protest March
The primary demands of the villagers are twofold and clear. Firstly, they seek strict disciplinary action against the temple priests who assaulted the devotees. Secondly, and more structurally, they are advocating for the appointment of permanent government-appointed priests at the Jyotiba temple to end what they describe as a problematic monopoly held by the current priests.
Village Sarpanch Vijay Patil provided specific details regarding the protest. "The priests beat up the devotees in the area. The monopoly of these priests should end and permanent govt priests be appointed," he stated emphatically. He confirmed that the protest march is scheduled to commence from Dasara Chowk at 11 am on Monday, proceeding directly to the district collector's office. A formal written statement outlining their demands will be presented to District Collector Amol Yedge in the presence of the assembled villagers.
Social Organization Calls for Broader Investigation
Simultaneously, the issue has garnered attention from civil society groups. The Prajasattak Samajik Sewa Sanstha, a prominent social organization based in Kolhapur, has escalated the matter by writing a formal letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The organization's request focuses on a broader investigation into the security lapses during the incident.
Dilip Desai, President of Prajasattak Samajik Sewa Sanstha, elaborated on their concerns. "Jyotiba Devasthan is a deity of the entire Maharashtra, and lakhs of devotees come here from all over the country. The Jyotiba Yatra is currently ongoing. A video of priests beating two devotees inside the temple premises went viral on social media, causing widespread outrage," he explained.
Desai further urged, "Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should instruct the district administration to conduct a thorough investigation. It is crucial to determine what the security guards and police personnel stationed at the temple were doing at the time of the fight. Additionally, any priests or security guards found guilty of misconduct or negligence must be transferred to other locations on a priority basis to restore faith and order."
