Kolkata Civil Defence Workers' Protest Turns Violent, 64 Detained
Chaos erupted on the bustling Foreshore Road in Kolkata on Tuesday as temporary workers from the civil defence and disaster management forces attempted to march toward the state secretariat, Nabanna. The situation escalated dramatically when these workers, who were demanding permanent employment, clashed with police personnel after being prevented from proceeding further.
Protesters Attempt to Reach Chief Minister's Site
Following their initial confrontation, the protesters shifted their focus toward Esplanade, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was conducting a separate protest regarding the SIR issue. The workers expressed their intention to personally submit their demands and seek a meeting with the Chief Minister at her protest stage. However, police authorities blocked this movement as well, citing security concerns and maintaining that the group could not proceed toward either Nabanna or the Chief Minister's location.
Multiple Confrontations Lead to Mass Detentions
The standoff intensified when protesters attempted to bypass police barricades, resulting in physical confrontations. Howrah Police responded by detaining 64 individuals from the scene. Some protesters then indicated they would redirect their efforts to Dharmatala to approach the Chief Minister's protest stage from another angle, but police intercepted this attempt too, leading to additional clashes and further detentions.
Officers at the site confirmed that the primary reason for preventing the march was to maintain public order and security protocols. The temporary workers, who have been serving in civil defence and disaster management roles, emphasized that their demand for permanent job status has been longstanding and unresolved, prompting this direct action.
Broader Context of Kolkata Protests
This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened political activity in Kolkata, with various groups utilizing public demonstrations to voice their concerns. The clash highlights ongoing tensions between government workers seeking job security and administrative measures to control public gatherings. Authorities have assured that the detained individuals will be processed according to standard legal procedures, while the civil defence workers maintain that their protest will continue until their employment demands are addressed through formal channels.
