Kolkata Esplanade Bus Stand Shifted for Purple Line Metro Station

Historic Esplanade Bus Stand Relocated to Pave Way for Major Metro Hub

In a significant development for Kolkata's urban infrastructure, the decades-old bus stand at Esplanade has finally begun its relocation process to make way for the upcoming Purple Line metro station. The new bus terminus at Curzon Park became operational on Thursday, marking a crucial step in transforming Esplanade into a comprehensive metro transportation hub.

Creating Space for Purple Line Integration

The relocation clears a substantial 300-meter by 40-meter area at the original bus stand site, which will now accommodate the Purple Line metro station. This strategic move will enable Esplanade to serve as a convergence point for three major metro lines: the existing Blue and Green lines, plus the forthcoming Purple Line. While the Blue and Green lines already have operational stations at Esplanade, the Purple Line addition will complete this vital transportation nexus.

The new temporary bus stand facility, situated behind the East-West Metro's Esplanade station at Curzon Park, spans an impressive 3,224 square meters. This represents approximately 1,000 square meters more space than the previous facility, offering enhanced capacity and improved amenities for commuters.

Enhanced Facilities at New Location

The relocated bus terminus features modern, organized layouts with several upgraded amenities designed to improve passenger experience:

  • Designated waiting rooms for passenger comfort
  • A dedicated food court area
  • Separate restroom facilities for different bus services
  • Sheltered areas for protection from weather elements
  • Air-conditioned booking counters for ticket purchases

State officials have confirmed that the newly christened 'Esplanade Bus Stand of State Govt Bus' will serve multiple transportation services, including SBSTC, WBTC, and NBSTC buses. Additionally, Bhutan-bound buses will now depart from this upgraded facility.

Operational Transition and Future Plans

While most buses have already begun using the new terminus, some SBSTC fleet vehicles continue to operate from previous locations. Transportation authorities indicate these remaining buses will be shifted in the next phase of the transition. The relocation process experienced delays due to pending permissions, but has now moved forward as planned.

Approximately 300-350 buses are expected to operate daily from the new terminus once fully operational. All buses entering the facility will follow a designated route crossing Mayo Road near the Netaji statue before proceeding along RR Avenue.

SBSTC sources have indicated they will monitor commuter behavior and traffic patterns over the coming days before implementing any revised timetables. This careful approach aims to ensure minimal disruption to daily commuters during the transition period.

The transformation of Esplanade into a triple-line metro hub represents a significant advancement in Kolkata's public transportation network, promising improved connectivity and reduced congestion for the city's millions of daily commuters.
