Kolkata Mayor Launches Water Projects to Tackle Scarcity

Kolkata Mayor Oversees Major Water Infrastructure Push Across City

In a significant move to address water scarcity, Mayor Firhad Hakim and senior officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation conducted an extensive tour of the city on Saturday. The officials inaugurated, laid foundation stones, and inspected sites for multiple underground water reservoirs and booster pumping stations, aiming to augment water supply in scarcity zones and provide safe drinking water to citizens currently dependent on groundwater.

Booster Pumping Station Inaugurated at Beleghata-CIT Road Intersection

Residents in parts of Beleghata and CIT Road are set to receive improved water access following the inauguration of a booster pumping station at the intersection of Beleghata Main Road and CIT More. With a sanctioned budget of Rs 4.3 crore, this station has a capacity to store 18 lakh litres of water per day. According to a KMC water supply department official, once connected to the Tallah water tank and operational, it will benefit residents of Beleghata Main Road and CIT Road, alleviating water shortages in these areas.

Foundation Stone Laid for VIP Nagar Reservoir Project

Mayor Hakim laid the foundation stone for an underground water reservoir-cum booster pumping station in VIP Nagar, located off Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. This project, sanctioned with Rs 5 crore, will draw water from the Dhapa water treatment plant. Upon completion, the reservoir will store 18 lakh litres of potable water, supplying pure drinking water to residents of VIP Nagar, Hastings Colony, Netajinagar Colony, and Jagarani, who currently rely on groundwater.

Sonali Park Reservoir to Enhance Supply in Bansdroni Area

Another key project saw the foundation stone laid for an underground water reservoir-cum water booster pumping station at Sonali Park in the Bansdroni area. This reservoir, with a capacity of 13.62 lakh litres, is designed to augment supply in water scarcity zones and provide safe drinking water to residents of Sonali Park and Dinesh Nagar. The booster pumping station, expected to be constructed within one year, will receive water from the treatment plant under construction at Dhalai Bridge, reducing dependence on groundwater.

Inspections for Additional Stations at Dover Lane and Dover Terrace

During the tour, civic officials inspected two sites at Dover Lane and Dover Terrace for the construction of separate water booster pumping stations. A KMC official explained that small plots have been identified for these stations, which will include underground reservoirs. Currently, residents in these neighbourhoods face water shortages due to low pressure from the Tallah supply. The new stations will be connected to the Garden Reach water treatment plant to resolve the water crisis in these localities effectively.

This comprehensive initiative underscores the KMC's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and ensuring reliable water access for Kolkata's residents, particularly in areas plagued by scarcity.
