Kolkata Teenager Leaves Home Following Family Dispute Over Gender Expression
A teenage girl from Kolkata's Lake Town area has allegedly left her home after facing parental disapproval for her choice of clothing and self-presentation, which her family described as 'boys' clothes'. This incident has triggered an extensive police search operation and brought renewed attention to the complex identity conflicts that adolescents often experience within family settings.
Details of the Disappearance
According to a formal complaint filed at the Lake Town Police Station, the minor went missing between 2 pm and 3:30 pm on Sunday. Her parents informed authorities that she departed from the residence carrying a trolley bag, a school bag, and approximately Rs 15,000 in cash. These circumstances have led investigators to suspect that her departure may have been carefully planned in advance.
The girl's mother revealed that family tensions had been building for several years regarding her daughter's preference for dressing and presenting herself in ways that challenged traditional gender norms. "For the last few years, she was dressing like a boy. She cuts her hair short and speaks and behaves in a manner that we were not used to," the mother explained. "We had objected earlier, but more recently we were trying to accept her. She was getting counselled, yet, after a minor argument she left."
Pattern of Conflict and Religious Inclination
This marks the second such incident involving the teenager in less than a year, according to family statements. The mother added that her daughter had repeatedly threatened to leave home if her demands for acceptance were not met. "She threatened several times to leave if we didn't accept her demands. Recently, she also expressed a desire to become a saint and was increasingly involved in religious activities," the mother disclosed.
Police Investigation Progress
Law enforcement officials from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate have identified two friends with whom the teenager was last seen communicating before her disappearance. Police are actively pursuing these leads as part of their comprehensive efforts to locate the missing minor.
"We are trying to track her phone and have circulated her photographs to nearby police stations," stated an officer involved in the investigation. Authorities suspect the teenager may have orchestrated her departure with considerable forethought, given the preparations evident in her actions.
Expert Perspectives on Adolescent Identity Formation
Mental health professionals emphasize that such cases frequently reflect deeper psychological and social tensions that emerge during the critical adolescent development period. Sreemoyee Tarafder, a consultant clinical psychologist, explained that identity formation intensifies significantly during teenage years.
"Adolescence is when identity begins to consolidate and individuals develop a sense of ownership over who they are," Tarafder noted. "If a person feels that their assigned gender does not align with their internal sense of identity, it can create significant distress, often referred to as gender dysphoria."
Rajarshi Neogi, a psychiatrist at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, stressed that such experiences should not be viewed through a pathological lens. "It is not a disease. The adolescent may be experiencing gender dysphoria. For parents, it can be unexpected and difficult, but the appropriate response is to seek professional help rather than resorting to reprimand," Neogi advised. "Identity cannot simply be changed—it may be suppressed, but it tends to resurface."
The ongoing police search continues as authorities work to ensure the teenager's safe return, while this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges families face when navigating complex questions of identity and self-expression during adolescence.
