Kolkata: TMC-BJP Clashes Erupt in Multiple City Areas

Political Tensions Boil Over in Kolkata with Multiple Clashes

Kolkata witnessed a series of violent confrontations between supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across several neighborhoods from Monday night through Tuesday morning. The clashes, which occurred in Bhowanipore, Baranagar, and Dhapa, have heightened political tensions in the city ahead of upcoming electoral activities.

Violence Erupts in Bhowanipore Over Poster Incident

The first incident unfolded in Bhowanipore around 8:30 PM on Monday when BJP workers alleged that TMC supporters had torn down posters featuring BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. This accusation sparked immediate protests outside the local police station, where BJP supporters gathered to voice their grievances. The situation escalated quickly, leading to physical altercations between the two groups. Police intervened promptly and detained three individuals to prevent further violence. The area remained tense for several hours as both parties traded accusations about the poster destruction.

Baranagar Witnesses Heated Confrontation and Injuries

In Baranagar's Ward 7, BJP leader Ghosh reported that his supporters were attacked by followers of TMC candidate Sayantika Banerjee while they were conducting election-related work. A formal complaint was lodged by the BJP at the Baranagar police station around midnight. The situation deteriorated when BJP supporters, led by Ghosh, surrounded the police station in protest. This led to a heated verbal exchange between members of both parties, which soon turned physical. A scuffle broke out in front of the police station, resulting in injuries to four individuals. Police had to step in to separate the groups and restore order.

Ghosh accused TMC miscreants of vandalizing their election stage and assaulting BJP workers. However, TMC candidate Sayantika Banerjee strongly refuted these allegations, stating that her supporters were not involved in any such incidents. "As far as I have heard, it was a local issue arising out of a personal dispute. It is being given a political colour to malign the party," she asserted. During their investigation, police reportedly discovered that the initial altercation in Baranagar stemmed from a dispute between two brothers from a local family, suggesting personal rather than purely political motivations.

Additional Incidents Reported Across the City

Around the same time, another violent episode was reported from Gopal Lal Thakur Road, where BJP worker Rajib Mishra was allegedly attacked. Mishra, a resident of Ward 10 and described as a long-time BJP worker, claimed he was chased and beaten on the street. In a surprising twist, Mishra told media that his attackers were actually "new" members of the BJP, indicating possible internal conflicts within the party.

On Tuesday morning, the political violence continued in the Dhapa area. BJP candidate from Entally, Priyanka Tibrewal, alleged that TMC workers obstructed and attacked her while she was campaigning. Police rushed to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. Based on Tibrewal's complaint, the Election Commission has directed Kolkata Police to register two First Information Reports (FIRs). Authorities have detained seven individuals, including six women, in connection with this incident.

Tibrewal provided details of her ordeal: "I went to the refugee camp in Tangra but Trinamool blocked us. CRPF rescued us. The same incident happened in Topsia. They had weapons. The police did not take any action." Her statement highlights concerns about security during political campaigning and raises questions about police responsiveness in volatile situations.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigations

Kolkata Police have been actively responding to these multiple incidents across the city. In addition to the detentions in Bhowanipore and Dhapa, they are investigating the Baranagar and Gopal Lal Thakur Road cases. The Election Commission's involvement in directing FIR registrations indicates the seriousness with which authorities are treating these clashes, especially given their timing relative to electoral processes.

The series of violent incidents underscores the intense political rivalry between TMC and BJP in Kolkata, with both parties accusing each other of provocation and violence. As investigations continue, there are calls for increased security measures to prevent further clashes and ensure peaceful political activities in the city.
