Kolkata residents are bracing for significant traffic disruptions over the weekend as the crucial Ultadanga Flyover has been temporarily shut down for urgent repair work. The closure, which began on Saturday, will remain in effect until Sunday, November 17, adding strain to a city already grappling with traffic restrictions due to the high-profile India-South Africa Test Match at Eden Gardens.
Traffic Diversions and Commuter Advisory
The flyover, a key artery connecting to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, will be closed for maintenance every night from 00:00 hours to 05:00 hours daily. The repair work includes patch repairs, application of mastic asphalt, road marking, and upgrades to traffic appurtenances.
Authorities have advised commuters, especially those heading to the airport, to budget extra time for their journeys. A significant traffic diversion has been put in place. The recommended alternative route for airport-bound vehicles is via the EM Bypass, Hudco crossing, Durgapur Bridge, and then onto VIP Road.
New Railway Connectivity for Nadia District
In a positive development for public transport, a new EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) train service was inaugurated on Saturday at the Amghata Railway Station in Nadia district. The first service on this new route departed from Amghata to Krishnanagar City at 11:30 am, promising improved connectivity for the region.
Weekend Weather Outlook
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a sunny climate for Kolkata on Saturday, accompanied by a moderate foggy morning. The weather office stated that temperatures are expected to range from a minimum of around 18 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 28 degrees Celsius.
Most districts in the region are likely to experience minimum temperatures below normal by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Shallow to moderate fog is predicted for the morning hours in a few places. The hill station of Darjeeling recorded the state's lowest temperature on Friday at a chilly 8.2 degrees Celsius. The IMD has confirmed no chance of rain for most areas in the near future.
