Kota Teen Flees Home to Stop Forced Child Marriage, Authorities Intervene
In a courageous act of defiance against child marriage, a 15-year-old Class 10 student from Kota fled her home on Saturday and sought help at the Bundi collectorate to stop her impending wedding, scheduled for April 20. The minor girl alleged that her father had arranged the marriage to a man at least 10 years her senior, with a financial deal involving Rs 4 lakh.
Swift Action by Childline and District Administration
Acting on directions from the district administration, a Childline team promptly rescued the girl and produced her before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The CWC ordered that she be sent to a shelter home until April 20, ensuring her safety and preventing the marriage from proceeding. Additionally, the committee initiated legal action to restrain her parents from solemnising the marriage before she turns 18, in strict compliance with child protection laws.
Details of the Case and the Girl's Plea
CWC chairperson Seema Poddar revealed that the girl, a resident of a village under the Raithal police station area and belonging to the Gurjar community, reached the additional district magistrate's office on Saturday afternoon seeking urgent intervention. She told ADM Ramkishore Meena that she wanted to continue her studies instead of getting married, highlighting her aspirations for education over early matrimony.
The girl further alleged that her father, who is addicted to alcohol, had fixed the marriage, and a deal worth Rs 4 lakh had been struck. Shockingly, a written agreement stated that double the amount would be returned if the marriage did not take place, underscoring the transactional nature of the arrangement.
