Krishna Basin Faces Water Crisis as Maharashtra Withholds Release

The Krishna river basin in Karnataka is bracing for a severe dry spell as Maharashtra has yet to release water from its reservoirs. The situation has been exacerbated by damage to the 22nd gate of the Hipparagi barrage, resulting in a massive loss of water.

Critical Water Levels at Hipparagi Barrage

During the corresponding period last year, the Hipparagi barrage held 1.76 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of live storage. However, as of May 10, 2026, only 0.31 tmcft of live storage remains. This meager amount is expected to suffice for just two weeks, raising concerns among farmers and residents dependent on the basin.

Impact of Damaged Gate

The damage to the 22nd gate of the Hipparagi barrage has led to uncontrolled water outflow, significantly reducing the available storage. Authorities are working to repair the gate, but the delay in water release from Maharashtra compounds the problem.

The Krishna basin is a vital water source for agriculture and drinking water in northern Karnataka. The current crisis threatens the summer crop and could lead to water rationing in affected areas.

Officials from Karnataka are in discussions with their Maharashtra counterparts to expedite water release. However, no immediate relief is in sight, and the coming weeks are critical for the region.
