Krishnagiri police seek new quarters, old ones dilapidated

KRISHNAGIRI: Personnel at the Kelamangalam police station in Krishnagiri district have appealed to the state government to demolish the dilapidated and unused residential quarters and construct new ones for them. The Kelamangalam police station, established in 1915 during British rule, has quarters built for a sub-inspector and eight policemen in the 1980s. A new police station was constructed in 2009, but the quarters have since fallen into disrepair, overgrown with plants and bushes due to lack of maintenance and use. The quarters have also become a habitat for snakes, posing a safety risk.

Police personnel forced to live in rented houses

“We are living in rented houses because the quarters built for police personnel are in a dilapidated condition. Due to lack of facilities, many of us have left our families in our native villages in other districts and stay in rented houses here,” a policeman said. He added that despite repeated requests for new quarters, no action had been taken thus far.

Appeal to Chief Minister

The personnel urged Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to intervene and take steps to construct new quarters for them. They highlighted the poor condition of the existing quarters, which are not only unsafe but also unsuitable for habitation. The lack of proper accommodation has forced many officers to live apart from their families, affecting their morale and efficiency.

The Kelamangalam police station serves a significant area in Krishnagiri district, and the personnel believe that providing adequate housing will improve their working conditions and enable them to serve the community better. The state government has been requested to allocate funds for the demolition of the old quarters and construction of modern residential facilities.
