Ladakh L-G Saxena Rebukes Activist Wangchuk Over Misleading Narrative
Ladakh L-G Saxena Rebukes Wangchuk on Misleading Narrative

NEW DELHI: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Tuesday urged activist Sonam Wangchuk to refrain from constructing a misleading and provocative narrative about the situation in the Union Territory. This came in response to Wangchuk's recent remarks expressing fears of social divisions similar to those in Manipur and indicating his support for the Cockroach Janta Party.

Conversation and Clarifications

Saxena stated that he had a candid conversation with Wangchuk and his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, who had championed her husband's cause during his detention. According to Saxena, Wangchuk acknowledged that comparing the situation in Ladakh with Manipur was an error in judgment. He also expressed uncertainty about the origins of the Cockroach Janta Party and agreed to study the motivations of its founders, potentially revisiting his stance if necessary.

Call for Responsible Discourse

Saxena emphasized that democratic expression should not be misused as a license for fabricating falsehoods or inciting unrest. He advised Wangchuk to avoid weaving narratives that could vitiate public discourse. The L-G noted that repeated rallies and protests, despite positive developments initiated by the central government, could negatively impact economic activities, particularly in the tourism sector, which forms the backbone of Ladakh's economy.

Positive Initiatives Acknowledged

Wangchuk reportedly appreciated several development projects undertaken recently, including the Him Sarovar project, restoration of the Igoo Phey Canal, construction of the Mahe-Topko Canal, and massive plantation drives. These initiatives reflect the government's commitment to the region's progress.

Background of the Controversy

Wangchuk had earlier stated that while his release order referred to creating an environment of trust, the ground reality did not reflect those assurances. He remarked, "Last week was very negative. There was conflict everywhere. I thought Ladakh would become another Manipur; it was heading in that direction." These comments sparked the L-G's response, highlighting the need for accurate and responsible dialogue.
