Large potholes on Iravathanallur Main Road in Madurai are severely disrupting traffic and leading to accidents. The road was damaged by overflowing sewage, creating hazardous conditions for motorists.
Residents Complain About Foul Smell and Accidents
Residents have complained about a foul smell emanating from an overflowing manhole on the road. The manhole forces traffic to navigate around it, causing accidents, particularly for two-wheelers attempting to cross the area. The road also features other potholes that significantly slow down traffic.
“The pothole has grown to about half the size of the road and is causing troubles to motorists,” said Subramaniam, a resident of Iravathanallur. He added that drinking water pipelines from the Mullaperiyar project are leaking onto the road, further worsening the situation.
Additional Issues in the Area
Commuters also face difficulties from garbage dumped at Vinayagar Colony in the vicinity, making travel even more challenging.
Authorities Take Action
Corporation workers have erected a barrier to prevent further accidents on the road. They have covered the pothole with sand as a temporary measure. Officials have stated that patchwork will be carried out to fix the pothole. “Once the larger pothole is filled, we will fill other potholes as well,” an official confirmed.
