Leopard Attack in Bahraich: Youth Seriously Injured After 5-Minute Struggle
A 20-year-old youth sustained serious injuries after a leopard attacked him outside his residence in the Katarniaghat forest area of Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, late on Sunday night. The victim, identified as Tulsi Ram, engaged in a fierce struggle with the wild animal for nearly five minutes before local villagers intervened to rescue him.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
The attack occurred in Bhattabargad Purwa village around 9:30 PM on Sunday. According to eyewitness accounts from local residents, Tulsi Ram was walking outside his house when a leopard suddenly emerged from nearby agricultural fields and launched a violent assault.
The youth immediately raised an alarm and fought desperately against the attacking leopard for several minutes. His cries alerted family members and neighboring villagers who rushed to the scene, ultimately forcing the animal to retreat back into the fields.
Severe Injuries and Immediate Response
Tulsi Ram suffered significant injuries during the prolonged attack, including a deep claw wound on his head that required immediate medical attention. He was promptly transported to the Primary Health Centre in Sujauli for emergency treatment.
The divisional forest officer confirmed that forest department teams were immediately alerted about the incident. Villagers have been advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant, particularly during evening and nighttime hours when leopard activity typically increases.
Growing Leopard Presence and Previous Tragedy
Residents of nearby Azamgarh Purwa village reported that a female leopard has been repeatedly spotted roaming near human settlements with her three cubs, significantly increasing fear and anxiety among the local population.
The community's apprehension intensified following a tragic incident that occurred just two nights earlier. On Friday night, a leopard entered a house in Azamgarh Purwa village and dragged away 7-year-old Raghuveer. The child's body was later discovered in a nearby field.
In a disturbing development, forest officials confirmed that the same leopard returned to the deceased child's house on Sunday night. Villagers managed to drive the animal away by raising alarms and creating loud noises, preventing another potential tragedy.
Official Measures and Ongoing Concerns
Range officer Surendra Srivastava stated that the forest department has installed a cage trap in the area in an attempt to capture the leopard responsible for these attacks. The department is monitoring the situation closely while implementing additional safety measures.
The consecutive attacks have highlighted the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the region, with villagers expressing growing concerns about their safety.
