LPG Shortage Sparks Increased Demand for PNG in Belagavi

The ongoing shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in Belagavi, reportedly exacerbated by the war in the Middle East, has led to a significant rise in demand for pipeline natural gas (PNG) connections. Residents across Belagavi city and the wider district are turning to PNG as a reliable alternative, driven by concerns over LPG availability and supply disruptions.

PNG Project Implementation and Current Status

The PNG project was initially implemented in Belagavi district in 2017, with a first-phase target of providing 50,000 connections. However, only about 34,000 connections were achieved initially. With the current LPG shortage, there is a renewed push to expand PNG adoption, particularly in areas covered by the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) wards where the network is operational. Work is actively progressing in most locations to enhance infrastructure.

Role of Megha City Gas Distribution

Megha City Gas Distribution Private Limited has taken responsibility for PNG distribution in Belagavi, catering to domestic, commercial, and industrial users. The company has introduced a revised pricing structure: initially, connections required a deposit of ₹9,500, but from January 2026, this has been reduced to a discounted rate of ₹8,500. For apartment complexes with more than 10 homes, the deposit is further lowered to ₹7,500.

After application submission, Megha Gas's technical team conducts a site visit to assess installation feasibility. If approved, the connection is typically established within 10 days. Each connection includes a smart meter, and billing is based on actual usage, with a bimonthly payment system in place.

Safety and Advantages of PNG

PNG offers enhanced safety compared to LPG, as it is a natural gas with a lower risk of explosion. Being lighter than air, it disperses quickly in case of a leak, reducing fire hazards. Additionally, PNG does not emit smoke, minimizing the potential for disasters and contributing to a cleaner environment.

Infrastructure and Future Plans

Adani Gas Limited has installed a natural gas pipeline from Dabhol in Maharashtra to Bengaluru, which passes through Belagavi district. This infrastructure supports a capacity to supply LPG to 50,000–60,000 households, with distributors aiming to increase this capacity in the coming days to meet growing demand.

How to Apply for PNG Connections

Residents in PNG network areas can apply for connections through Megha Gas Distribution staff or by visiting their offices directly. Alternatively, they can contact the toll-free numbers 180 123 1803 or 04046 56 5555 to have the marketing team visit their homes for registration.

Required documents for registration include:

  • Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, or passport
  • Latest electricity bill or water bill
  • Property tax payment receipt

For rented properties, a no-objection letter (NOC) from the owner is also necessary.

This shift towards PNG highlights a broader trend in energy consumption in Belagavi, as residents seek more stable and safer alternatives amid global and local supply challenges.
