Lucknow Fire: Residents Warned After 2020 Blaze

Lucknow Fire Tragedy: A Disaster Foretold by Residents

Residents of a densely packed settlement in Lucknow are expressing anguish and frustration, stating that the recent devastating fire was a disaster waiting to happen. They vividly recall a similar blaze that erupted in December 2020 within the same cramped cluster, a warning sign they believe was tragically ignored by authorities.

Echoes of the 2020 Fire Incident

In the 2020 incident, at least six shanties were completely gutted, and two young girls suffered burns. Mithilesh, aged 8, and Jyoti, aged 6, sustained minor injuries but received timely medical treatment and recovered safely, according to local resident Rajesh Srivastava, who witnessed the event. Fire tenders managed to control the flames within thirty minutes, averting what could have been a much larger catastrophe at that time.

Unheeded Warnings and Persistent Vulnerabilities

However, residents allege that their pleas for action went unaddressed. "We had urged the administration after the 2020 fire to relocate us to a safer place," said Wasim Khan, highlighting the community's desperate calls for intervention. Many point to the same critical vulnerabilities that have persisted:

  • Cramped and overcrowded living conditions
  • Use of temporary and hazardous power connections
  • Storage of LPG cylinders in unsafe manners

These factors collectively made the settlement highly prone to fires. "Nothing changed and the risks remained the same," added another resident, underscoring the neglect.

Official Response and Ongoing Risks

Fire officials noted that the exact cause of the 2020 blaze could not be conclusively determined, which may have contributed to inaction. With the latest fire causing widespread destruction, residents say their worst fears have materialized. "If steps had been taken earlier, this could have been avoided," lamented Ram Pravesh Mishra, a resident of Vikas Nagar, reflecting the sentiment of a community left to grapple with preventable tragedy.

The repeated incidents underscore a pressing need for improved fire safety measures and proactive urban planning in vulnerable settlements across Lucknow and similar urban areas in Uttar Pradesh.
