Lucknow Fuel Consumption Skyrockets Over 140% Amid Panic Buying Rumors
Fuel consumption in Lucknow experienced a dramatic and unprecedented surge on Thursday, as widespread rumors triggered long queues at petrol pumps across the city. According to consolidated data from three major government oil companies, petrol sales skyrocketed by over 140% and diesel sales by more than 100% within a single day.
Official Sales Figures Reveal Staggering Increases
The data, compiled from Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, shows that total petrol sales in Lucknow jumped from 881 kilolitres on Wednesday to 2,123 kilolitres on Thursday. This represents a massive increase of 141% in just 24 hours.
Similarly, diesel sales climbed from 768 kilolitres on Wednesday to 1,591 kilolitres on Thursday, marking a substantial rise of 107%. These figures highlight the scale of the panic buying that gripped the city following rumors about potential fuel shortages.
Officials Confirm No Actual Shortage Exists
District Supply Officer of Lucknow, VP Singh, addressed the situation directly, stating that the sudden spike in demand was primarily driven by bulk purchases by consumers reacting to unfounded rumors regarding fuel availability. He emphatically reiterated that there is absolutely no shortage of petrol or diesel at any of the 290 fuel outlets operating within Lucknow district.
Singh further assured the public that all supply lines remain stable and fully operational. The administration has made a strong appeal to citizens to avoid panic buying, warning that such behavior places unnecessary pressure on the supply system and could potentially create an artificial scarcity where none exists.
Enhanced Security and Monitoring Measures Implemented
In response to the chaotic scenes at petrol pumps, law enforcement authorities have significantly intensified monitoring of fuel stations to ensure smooth and regulated distribution. Joint Commissioner of Police for Law and Order, Babloo Kumar, confirmed that all Station House Officers are on high alert.
"We have deployed Provincial Armed Constabulary jawans and regular police personnel at several retail outlets across the city to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents," Kumar stated.
Adding to the security presence, Chief Warden of Civil Defence, Amarnath Mishra, reported that civil defence volunteers were deployed at petrol pumps on Friday. These volunteers played a crucial role in assisting with crowd management and ensuring orderly fuel distribution during the peak of the panic buying.
Reports of Fuel Rationing Emerge from Residents
Despite official assurances, several Lucknow residents reported experiencing fuel rationing at various petrol pumps during the sudden demand surge. Mohammed Bilal, a resident of Dewa Road, shared that he was only allowed to purchase petrol worth Rs 2,000 for his car. When he requested additional fuel, pump staff refused, citing specific instructions to limit supply to individual customers.
Similarly, Akash Sharma, a two-wheeler rider from Rajendra Nagar, reported being given petrol worth just Rs 200 despite needing more for his daily commuting requirements. These accounts suggest that some retail outlets implemented informal rationing measures to manage the overwhelming demand and prevent complete stock depletion.
Administration's Continued Appeal for Public Cooperation
Authorities continue to stress that the fuel supply situation in Lucknow remains normal and stable. They have repeatedly urged citizens to rely on official information rather than rumors and to refrain from hoarding fuel. The administration warns that panic buying not only disrupts normal supply chains but also inconveniences other genuine customers who require fuel for essential travel and work purposes.
The deployment of additional security personnel and civil defence volunteers at petrol pumps is expected to continue until normal consumption patterns resume. Officials remain confident that once public anxiety subsides and accurate information circulates, fuel sales will return to their regular levels without any lasting impact on the city's supply infrastructure.
