A catastrophic fire erupted on Thursday night at the bustling Barabirwa vegetable market located in Krishna Nagar, Lucknow, resulting in the complete destruction of more than 20 shops and causing significant damage to over 100 others. The incident, which began around 11:30 PM near a local mall, sent shockwaves through the densely populated market area, triggering widespread panic among residents and shopkeepers.
Intense Flames and Explosions Create Chaotic Scene
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire was so ferocious that the towering flames could be seen from nearly three kilometers away, while thick, acrid smoke blanketed the entire locality. The situation was further exacerbated by a series of loud explosions—estimated between 10 and 12—which are suspected to have been caused by LPG cylinder blasts within the market premises. These explosions added to the chaos and hampered initial rescue efforts.
Firefighting Efforts and Alleged Delays
Fire brigade teams from multiple stations, including Krishna Nagar, Alambagh, and PGI, rushed to the scene with approximately 10 fire tenders deployed to combat the inferno. After several hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was finally brought under control, with cooling operations continuing into the early morning hours. Police personnel and local residents played a crucial role in evacuation and rescue operations, ensuring no casualties were reported despite the scale of the disaster.
However, shopkeepers have raised serious concerns, alleging that fire tenders arrived nearly an hour after the incident was first reported, allowing the fire to intensify and spread rapidly. Officials have countered these claims, stating that their teams responded promptly and worked tirelessly to contain the blaze.

The Barabirwa market, sprawling across nearly 50,000 square feet, houses hundreds of shops dealing in fruits, vegetables, grains, and various other goods. Preliminary investigations suggest that the presence of large quantities of plastic sacks, cardboard, and other highly combustible materials stored throughout the market significantly accelerated the fire's spread, turning the area into a tinderbox.
Official Statements and Preliminary Findings
Chief Fire Officer of Lucknow, Ankush Mittal, provided crucial insights into the incident. He stated that preliminary findings indicate the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit in one of the shops. "Around 200 shops are located in the market, and 15 to 20 shops have been completely gutted. The fire has now been brought under control, and cooling operations are underway," Mittal confirmed.
Police authorities swiftly cordoned off the affected area to ensure public safety and facilitate evacuation procedures. While no loss of life has been reported, property damage is feared to run into several lakhs of rupees.
