Ludhiana's Gill Road Plunged into Traffic Chaos Amid Prolonged Construction Delays

Commuters navigating through Gill Road in Ludhiana are enduring an increasingly frustrating ordeal, with one side of the road closed for over a month due to ongoing construction work. Simultaneously, water supply lines are being laid on the other side, exacerbating the congestion and disruption. The situation has left residents and daily travelers at their wit's end, as the pace of work appears to be moving at a snail's pace, according to local reports.

Residents and Shopkeepers Voice Their Frustrations

Local commuters have expressed mounting impatience, citing that the construction efforts are progressing too slowly. Adding to the chaos, several adjoining roads have also been closed to vehicle movement, leading to frequent and severe traffic jams throughout the area. Shopkeepers operating along Gill Road are equally troubled, as the ongoing work severely impacts their business operations and daily accessibility.

Under the surface water project, water supply lines are being installed along Gill Road. However, this process has been marred by regular leakage incidents, further complicating the construction environment and causing additional inconveniences for the public.

Official Visits and Public Complaints Highlight Systemic Issues

In response to the growing unrest, Deputy Mayor Prince Johar visited Gill Road on Sunday to review the ongoing construction activities. During his inspection, he likely assessed the progress and addressed some of the public concerns directly.

Kuldeep Singh Khaira, a city resident and activist, highlighted deeper issues with the project. He revealed that a complaint had previously been filed with the vigilance department regarding the poor-quality construction of Gill Road. Despite this, officials initiated reconstruction work, which has now been stalled for the past six days. Khaira emphasized that the public is facing significant hardships, as Gill Road remains closed and adjacent routes are also blocked.

"The officials should have taken roads one by one to minimize disruption," Khaira stated. He further demanded a joint inspection and proper documentation of the existing damaged road. Additionally, he called for the cost of reconstruction to be recovered from the responsible contractors and officials, urged the conclusion of the ongoing vigilance inquiry in a strictly time-bound manner, and advocated for disciplinary and legal action against all accountable individuals.

Residents Share Personal Experiences of Inconvenience

Radhey Shyam Sharma, a resident of Civil Lines, shared his personal ordeal: "I went to that side for some work on Saturday and it took almost two hours to reach the destination due to massive traffic jams. The officials should complete the work as soon as possible because Gill Road is a major artery for city residents." Sharma also pointed out that many other areas in Ludhiana have roads in poor condition, necessitating urgent attention from authorities.

Official Explanation and Timeline for Completion

Bhupinder Singh, the SDO of Zone C, provided an official perspective on the delays. He explained that the construction of Gill Road involves building a cemented roadway, which requires selected stretches to be closed for a 21-day curing period to ensure durability and quality. "It will take at least two more months to complete the work on Gill Road because we are proceeding in intervals," Singh stated.

He appealed to the public for support, emphasizing that cooperation with the civic body is essential to deliver high-quality roads. "Only then will we be able to provide good quality roads to them," he added, acknowledging the temporary hardships but underscoring the long-term benefits of the project.

The prolonged construction and associated traffic disruptions on Gill Road underscore a critical need for improved urban planning and faster execution of public works in Ludhiana. As residents continue to voice their frustrations, the focus remains on ensuring timely completion and accountability for any lapses in the construction process.
