Violent Clash Erupts in Ludhiana Over Street Food Cart Dispute
High drama unfolded in the bustling electronics market of Ludhiana's old city area on Friday, as shopkeepers from the electronics and books markets engaged in a violent physical confrontation. The dispute centered on the contentious issue of allowing street-food carts to operate within the market premises, escalating into a scuffle that resulted in property damage and multiple allegations from both sides.
Root Cause: Illegal Street Food Carts Spark Conflict
The conflict originated approximately twenty days prior when a shopkeeper operating an electronics business filed a formal complaint with the Municipal Corporation. The complaint highlighted the "illegal" establishment of street-food carts along the roadside within the electronics market, which the complainant argued caused significant traffic congestion and encroached on public space. Following this complaint, municipal authorities intervened and removed the carts from the area.
However, tensions reignited on Friday when, according to the electronics shopkeeper's allegations, a vendor and his associates defiantly returned to set up their carts once again. The vendor countered this claim, asserting that the complainant, along with his brother and another shopkeeper, were the aggressors who vandalized their carts and issued threats.
Market Presidents Take Sides, Violence Escalates
The situation intensified when the president of the books market entered the fray in support of the street-food vendor. The electronics shopkeeper alleged that the books market president, accompanied by his associates, launched an attack against him and proceeded to vandalize his shop. He reiterated his stance that the food carts are unlawful and create traffic chaos by encroaching on the roadside.
In a sharp rebuttal, the books market president accused the electronics market shopkeepers of hypocrisy, pointing out that their own shops frequently encroach on space outside their premises without facing municipal action. He demanded that the corporation first address these shop encroachments before targeting the food carts. Furthermore, he claimed that during the altercation, electronics market shopkeepers assaulted him with a rod.
Police Investigation Underway Amid Conflicting Claims
Law enforcement authorities have stepped in to manage the volatile situation. Inspector Paramveer Singh, the Station House Officer at Division Number 1 police station, confirmed that the police have received formal complaints from both parties involved in the clash. The police are currently conducting a thorough enquiry into the matter, carefully verifying the allegations from each side before determining any further action.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of urban market management in Ludhiana, where disputes over space and legality can quickly spiral into public disorder. The outcome of the police investigation is awaited to bring clarity and resolution to this contentious market conflict.
