Maharashtra CEO Reviews Nagpur Electoral Roll Prep, Warns Officials Over Lapses
Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam chaired a critical review meeting in Nagpur on Wednesday to evaluate the preparedness for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, scheduled to commence in April. The meeting focused on ensuring a smooth and efficient rollout of the revision exercise across Maharashtra.
Timely Execution and Preparatory Tasks Emphasized
Chockalingam directed officials to complete essential preparatory tasks within the next 10 days. These tasks include comprehensive mapping of voters, thorough verification processes, and ensuring the readiness of all required equipment. He stressed that timely execution is paramount to avoid any disruptions during the SIR exercise.
Strict Action Threatened Against Erring Officials
Concerns were raised regarding the functioning of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), with reports indicating significant lapses in field-level work. Similar issues were flagged concerning the performance of some Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AROs). Taking serious note of these deficiencies, the CEO issued a stern warning, stating that strict action would be initiated against officials found negligent.
Sources from the administration revealed that departmental inquiries would be conducted in such cases, with potential actions including suspension. This move underscores the Election Commission's commitment to maintaining integrity and efficiency in electoral processes.
Enhanced Monitoring and Accountability Measures
Officials were instructed to intensify ground-level monitoring and ensure accountability at every stage of the revision process. The meeting was attended by key figures, including the district collector, Zilla Parishad CEO, and other senior officials from the district administration, highlighting the importance placed on this initiative.
Inspection of EVM Warehouse in Wadi
Later in the day, Chockalingam visited Wadi to inspect the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) warehouse. He meticulously reviewed the storage conditions and security arrangements at the facility where EVMs are kept. Necessary directions were issued to ensure full compliance with safety and maintenance protocols, aiming to safeguard the integrity of voting equipment.
Broader Context of Electoral Roll Management
This review forms part of the Election Commission's broader push to streamline electoral roll management ahead of upcoming polls. By addressing lapses and enforcing strict measures, the commission aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of voter lists, thereby strengthening the democratic framework in Maharashtra.
