Maharashtra Chief Minister Assures Rigorous Probe in Astrologer Rape Case

Nagpur: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Sunday that the special investigation team (SIT) examining rape accusations against astrologer Ashok Kharat is being closely monitored at the highest echelons of government. He emphasized that no individual, irrespective of political connections, will be exempt from scrutiny or consequences in this serious matter.

Direct Oversight and Encouragement for Victims

Fadnavis revealed that he has personally instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to supervise the investigation to ensure its thoroughness and impartiality. He noted a positive development, with an increasing number of women stepping forward to file complaints. Investigators are actively encouraging victims to speak out by providing reassurances to them and their families, fostering a supportive environment for justice.

Rejecting Political Allegations and Exposing the Case

Dismissing opposition attempts to politicize the issue, the Chief Minister asserted that his administration was responsible for uncovering the case based on actionable intelligence. "The Kharat matter is extremely serious. We are the ones who blew the lid off it based on our intelligence," he stated. He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Nashik police commissioner and the SIT in pursuing the investigation.

Accountability Demands and Evidence of Meetings

In response to opposition calls for action against politicians linked to the accused, Fadnavis questioned why members of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, who allegedly granted favors to Kharat, should not also be held accountable. "If those who merely met him (Kharat) should face action, then those who gave him the 40km water line through a special cabinet meeting—what punishment should they get? Why are you silent about that?" he challenged.

He mentioned possessing evidence of opposition leaders visiting Kharat but clarified that it is the police's responsibility, not his, to act on such information. "If someone's involvement is established, action will be taken. But we are not interested in politics—we are interested in women's dignity," he affirmed.

Resignation of Women Commission Chairperson

Regarding Rupali Chakankar's recent resignation as chairperson of the state women commission, Fadnavis explained that she stepped down after acknowledging that her close association with Kharat made it untenable for her to continue in the role, underscoring the case's sensitivity.

Legal Warnings Against Misinformation and Victim Identification

Police authorities issued a stern warning against the misuse of technology and social media in this case. They cautioned that strict action will be taken against individuals who:

  • Create or circulate AI-generated images of Kharat with different women.
  • Reveal the identities of victims, violating legal protections.

A police officer noted that those breaching Section 72(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which prohibits disclosing identities of sexual offence victims, could face imprisonment of up to two years. (With inputs from Santosh Sonawane in Nashik)
