Maharashtra Local Polls: Coalition Dharma Collapses as Parties Turn Rivals
Maharashtra coalition dharma breaks in local body polls

Coalition Dharma Abandoned in Maharashtra Local Elections

In a dramatic political development, Maharashtra's ruling coalition partners are turning against each other as local body elections approach across the state. The situation reached a boiling point on Tuesday when Shiv Sena ministers boycotted the state cabinet meeting, accusing their BJP allies of poaching leaders and violating the "coalition dharma."

What began as tension at the state level has now escalated into open warfare at the grassroots level, with alliance partners contesting against each other in multiple districts. The traditional political equations have been completely overturned as local considerations trump alliance commitments.

Unlikely Alliances and Surprising Partnerships

The collapse of coalition discipline is most evident in Kolhapur, where NCP minister Hasan Mushrif has formed an unexpected alliance with rival Nationalist Congress Party (SP) at Chandgad and Kagal. This surprising partnership aims to challenge the ruling coalition allies BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena respectively.

In Satara district, the political drama involves family connections. Aniketraj Nimbalkar, son of NCP MLC Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, is contesting from Shiv Sena against BJP's Samshersinh Naik-Nimbalkar, who happens to be the brother of ex-MP Ranjeetsinh.

The Sindhudurg's Kankavli municipal council presents another fascinating scenario where the Krantikari Vichar Party (KVP) has managed to bring together arch-rivals Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena UBT and Shinde Sena to jointly take on BJP led by minister Nitesh Rane.

Regional Variations in Alliance Patterns

The political landscape varies significantly across different regions of Maharashtra. In Raigad district, NCP led by Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare has joined hands with BJP to challenge Shinde-led Sena. Conversely, in Palghar district, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has surprisingly allied with Shinde Sena to take on the BJP.

Thane district's Ambernath municipal council presents a direct contest between Sena and BJP for the council chief's post. Within the opposition camp, Congress is contesting independently while other parties including Sena UBT, MNS and NCP(SP) have fielded separate candidates.

Solapur district witnessed an unusual development where the newly formed Angar municipal panchayat was won by BJP uncontested. This followed former MLA and NCP leader Rajan Patil joining BJP and the nomination of NCP candidate for panchayat chief post being declared invalid.

Complex Political Equations Across Maharashtra

Dharashiv district in Marathwada exemplifies the complete breakdown of traditional alliances, with all six parties deciding to go separate ways in Umarga. However, in Bhoom and Paranda, all parties have joined hands through a common panel against Shinde-led Sena, while in Kalamb, both NCP factions are fighting together against other parties.

In Nanded district, Congress has decided to join hands with Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), with similar alliances formed in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Buldhana.

Vidarbha region shows local equations becoming more important than alliance politics. BJP has decided to field candidates for all municipal council chief posts in Nagpur district, while Shinde Sena and NCP have fielded candidates on at least 15 council posts, setting the stage for internal battles within the Mahayuti alliance.

Congress, despite being a major player in Vidarbha, is struggling with internal factionalism. In Yavatmal's Pusad, five parties have fielded candidates for the council chief post, with similar trends visible in other councils of the district and neighboring Akola district.

Nashik district presents a mixed picture where BJP and NCP have joined hands to take on Shinde Sena in Yeola, Bhagur and Sinnar. However, in Nandgaon, Sena and BJP are contesting against NCP, while in Trimbakeshwar and Chandwad, all parties are fighting against each other.

The widespread breakdown of coalition discipline across Maharashtra indicates that local political calculations are overriding state-level alliances, creating unprecedented political scenarios that could reshape the state's political landscape for years to come.
