Maharashtra Government's Ambitious Water Storage Target for Kikwi Dam
The Maharashtra government has set an ambitious and critical target to complete 75% of the water storage capacity at Kikwi Dam in Trimbakeshwar taluka before the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. This initiative represents a significant race against time, as the essential construction work is unlikely to commence before October 2026, creating a tight schedule for project completion.
Addressing Nashik's Growing Water Demands
As Nashik city continues its rapid expansion, the storage capacity of the existing Gangapur Dam has notably decreased due to persistent silt accumulation. To proactively address the city's future water requirements, the Kikwi Dam project received official approval with an estimated budget of 283.54 crore rupees. This substantial investment aims to provide Nashik with a reserved water supply of 2.4 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet), ensuring long-term water security for the growing urban population.
A senior officer from the Water Resources Department (WRD) emphasized the project's importance, stating it is designed to meet escalating municipal and agricultural needs while supporting regional development goals.
Extensive Land Acquisition Requirements and Challenges
The Kikwi Dam project necessitates the acquisition of a total of 909.205 hectares of land, comprising 707.585 hectares of private land and 201.62 hectares of forest land. This land spans across ten villages: Talwade, Brahmanwade, Pimpi, Ghumodi, Shirasgaon, Kachurli, Sapgaon, Pimpalad, Talegaon, and Amboli.
Currently, the district administration is concentrating its efforts on the first phase of acquisition, specifically targeting the 52 hectares required for the dam's foundation. This initial step is crucial to ensure the foundation is prepared in time, allowing water storage activities to begin as scheduled.
However, the land acquisition process is encountering significant resistance from local farmers who are dissatisfied with the compensation rates established by the administration. Despite ongoing village-level meetings intended to mediate with landholders and negotiate fair market values, the process has experienced considerable delays. To date, only 131 landowners have provided written consent for the acquisition of 849 plots, highlighting the ongoing challenges in securing necessary agreements.
Regulatory Hurdles and Environmental Approvals
Beyond the land disputes, the Kikwi Dam project faces substantial regulatory obstacles that further complicate its timeline. The administration is actively struggling to obtain the necessary clearances from the central government for the 201.62 hectares of forest land involved in the project.
Additionally, critical approvals concerning environmental impact assessments and climate change considerations remain pending. These regulatory steps are essential for ensuring the project complies with national environmental standards and sustainable development practices, but they contribute to the overall project delays.

Once successfully completed, the Kikwi Dam is expected to deliver multiple significant benefits to the Nashik region. Primarily, it aims to resolve the persistent drinking water crisis in Nashik city, providing a reliable and substantial water source for residents.
