Mahayuti Secures Six Legislative Council Seats Unopposed in Maharashtra
Mahayuti Wins Six MLC Seats Unopposed in Maharashtra

The Mahayuti alliance has secured six seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council unopposed, following a series of withdrawals by opposition candidates. This development has bolstered the ruling coalition's representation in the upper house of the state legislature.

Election Details

The elections for the six seats were scheduled to be held on December 14, 2024. However, due to the withdrawal of candidates from the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and other parties, the Mahayuti candidates were declared elected unopposed. The six seats were earlier held by members from various parties, including the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Shiv Sena (UBT).

Winners and Allocations

The winning candidates from the Mahayuti alliance include two from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), two from the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and two from the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). The BJP's candidates are Pravin Darekar and Ram Shinde. The Shiv Sena fielded Sachin Ahir and Amol Kulkarni, while the NCP's winners are Rajesh Vitekar and Shivajirao Garje.

Opposition Withdrawals

The MVA initially planned to contest the elections but later decided to withdraw their candidates, citing lack of sufficient numbers to win. The decision came after a meeting of opposition leaders, including Congress's Balasaheb Thorat, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction)'s Jitendra Awhad, and Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Anil Parab. They stated that the ruling coalition had an overwhelming majority in the electoral college, making the contest futile.

Impact on Legislative Council

With these wins, the Mahayuti's strength in the 78-member Legislative Council has increased to over 50 seats, giving it a comfortable majority. This is expected to ease the passage of bills and government policies in the upper house. The opposition, on the other hand, has seen its numbers dwindle further.

Political analysts view this as a significant setback for the MVA, which has been struggling to maintain unity and electoral momentum. The unopposed election also underscores the dominance of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra's political landscape.
