SAD Leader Bikram Singh Majithia Criticizes AAP Government Over Punjab's Escalating Debt Burden
In a sharp critique of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party administration, Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia has accused the Punjab government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of recklessly increasing the state's debt burden. The allegations come amid growing concerns about Punjab's financial health.
Substantial Loan Acquisitions Within Weeks
Majithia revealed in a written statement that the AAP government has borrowed a staggering Rs 2,800 crore within just twenty days. This development contradicts earlier promises made by the administration to avoid increasing debt and instead reduce the existing financial burden.
The former minister detailed the specific loan amounts: "At the beginning of April, the government took a loan of Rs 1,500 crore, and now an additional Rs 1,300 crore has been borrowed." He emphasized that these funds were allegedly secured "for their own comforts" rather than essential public services.
Alarming Debt Projections for Punjab
According to Majithia's assessment, Punjab's total debt has already surpassed the Rs 4 lakh crore mark under the current administration. He issued a stark warning about the trajectory of this financial crisis: "At the current pace of borrowing, it may soon reach Rs 5 lakh crore."
The Akali Dal leader contrasted the government's spending priorities, noting that while funds seem readily available for advertisements and AAP rallies across the country, the treasury allegedly becomes empty when it comes to disbursing employees' dearness allowance.
Broader Implications of the Financial Crisis
Majithia's statement highlights a significant contradiction between the AAP government's pre-election promises and its current financial management. The rapid accumulation of debt raises questions about fiscal discipline and long-term economic sustainability for Punjab.
The criticism from the opposition leader underscores growing political tensions regarding economic governance in the state. As Punjab navigates these financial challenges, the debate over resource allocation between administrative expenses and public welfare commitments continues to intensify.
