Malegaon Mayor Condemns BJP Leader's 'Dirty Politics' During Holy Month

In a heated political confrontation, Malegaon Mayor Nasrin Shaikh on Tuesday launched a scathing attack against BJP's former MP Kirit Somaiya, accusing him of engaging in what she termed "cheap and dirty politics" during the sacred month of Ramzan. Shaikh, along with Deputy Mayor Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed and other members of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation, took a firm stand at the entrance of the civic body's office to physically prevent Somaiya from entering the premises during his visit to the city.

Mayor's Strong Accusations Against Political Interference

Mayor Nasrin Shaikh expressed her frustration with Somaiya's repeated interventions, stating, "When there was no elected body in Malegaon, Somaiya had a field day. He could come here whenever he wanted and do whatever he pleased." She emphasized that the BJP leader is now indulging in politics of hatred that specifically targets religious occasions in the Muslim-majority city. "He does this every time there is a religious festival in Malegaon. Now we are observing Ramzan here, and in the past too, Somaiya has sought such occasions to spread hatred and defame our city," Shaikh claimed with visible emotion.

To formalize her opposition, the mayor revealed she has written an official letter to Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Jadhav, explicitly requesting that no information be provided to Somaiya unless it has been properly validated and approved by the Corporation House. This move represents a significant escalation in the ongoing tension between local administration and the visiting BJP figure.

Controversy Over Birth and Death Certificates

The conflict centers around approximately 4,400 delayed birth and death certificates issued by the Malegaon civic body. Deputy Mayor Shan-e-Hind addressed Somaiya's allegations directly, stating, "Somaiya has claimed these certificates were fake and forged, suggesting they were given to Bangladeshis and Rohingyas for rehabilitation purposes. However, the Special Investigation Team's examinations have found no evidence to support these claims. This appears to be a futile effort to defame Malegaon's reputation."

Following meetings with Additional Collector Devdatta Kekan and Additional SP Tegbir Singh Sandhu, Kirit Somaiya addressed the media with counter-allegations. He declared that all 4,400 delayed certificates have been cancelled and asserted, "None of the people have been able to provide tangible evidence of their birth in India. Such individuals represent a genuine threat to our country's security." The former MP went further, suggesting, "Their inability to provide proper certificates is sufficient for me to claim they are not Indian citizens. They could potentially be from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or even Rohingya communities."

Complex Implications and Community Reactions

Interestingly, among the affected applicants are approximately 300 Hindus whose certificates have also been cancelled. Somaiya argued that since these individuals cannot prove their birth within the country, legal cases of cheating should be filed against them. This aspect adds complexity to what might otherwise be perceived as religiously charged allegations.

Local community leader Nikhil Pawar, president of the Amhi Malegaonkar Vidhayak Sangharsha Samiti, strongly condemned Somaiya's statements. Pawar challenged, "If Somaiya genuinely believes Malegaon residents pose security threats, he should utilize his connections with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take appropriate action. How can BJP-led state and central governments remain silent in such a serious situation? We completely reject Somaiya's attempts to defame both our city and its cultural heritage."

The confrontation highlights deepening political divisions in Malegaon, with local representatives accusing an external political figure of exploiting religious sensitivities for political gain, while the BJP leader maintains his actions are necessary for national security. The situation remains tense as both sides refuse to back down from their respective positions.
