West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staged a sit-in protest in Kolkata on Wednesday to condemn the post-poll violence that has gripped the state since the conclusion of the assembly elections. Addressing the gathering, she alleged that 12 workers of her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), have been killed in the aftermath of the polls. The protest, held at the heart of the city, saw a large turnout of party supporters and leaders.
Demand for CBI Probe
Banerjee reiterated her demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incidents of violence. She accused the opposition parties of orchestrating attacks on her party workers and creating an atmosphere of fear. "We are not against any investigation, but we want a fair and impartial probe," she said. The Chief Minister also urged the Election Commission to take note of the situation and ensure the safety of all citizens.
Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal
The state has witnessed several clashes between supporters of the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since the election results were announced. Reports of arson, vandalism, and attacks on party offices have emerged from various districts. The BJP has also alleged that its workers are being targeted and has demanded central forces to be deployed in the state. The political tension remains high as both sides trade accusations.
Banerjee's dharna comes amid a series of protests and counter-protests. She has called for peace and urged the administration to take strict action against those responsible for the violence. The Chief Minister also announced compensation for the families of the deceased workers. Meanwhile, the state police have registered several cases and arrested a number of individuals in connection with the clashes.
The political scenario in West Bengal continues to be volatile, with both major parties blaming each other for the deteriorating law and order situation. The central government has also expressed concern and offered assistance to the state government to maintain peace. However, Banerjee has maintained that the state is capable of handling the situation and has rejected any suggestion of imposing President's Rule.
