Mamata Refuses Resignation, Claims Moral Victory

Outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign following her party's defeat in the state assembly elections, asserting that the Trinamool Congress achieved a 'moral victory.' In a press conference held on Tuesday, Banerjee claimed that the election results were not a reflection of the people's true mandate but rather a manipulated outcome engineered by the Election Commission.

Mamata Targets Election Commission

Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of bias and collusion with the Bharatiya Janata Party. She alleged that the polling process was marred by irregularities, including voter suppression and tampering with electronic voting machines. 'This is not a defeat but a moral victory for us. The people are with us, but the system was against us,' she said.

Support from INDIA Alliance Leaders

The Trinamool Congress chief revealed that she received phone calls from several leaders of the opposition INDIA alliance, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and Hemant Soren. She stated that these leaders expressed solidarity and urged her to continue the fight against the ruling party. Banerjee emphasized that opposition unity would only strengthen in the coming days, hinting at a larger coalition to challenge the BJP in future elections.

Opposition Unity on the Horizon

Banerjee's remarks come amid speculations of a broader opposition alliance to take on the BJP in the 2029 general elections. She indicated that the INDIA bloc would expand and consolidate its base, with more regional parties joining hands. 'We are not defeated; we are regrouping. The fight for democracy and federalism will continue,' she added.

The outgoing chief minister also dismissed calls for her resignation from the post, stating that she would continue to serve the people of West Bengal as a legislator and party leader. She urged her supporters to remain calm and united, assuring them that the Trinamool Congress would bounce back stronger.

Political analysts view Banerjee's stance as a strategic move to keep her political relevance alive and maintain morale among party workers. The coming days are likely to see intensified political activity as the opposition seeks to exploit any cracks in the BJP's dominance.
