Mamata Banerjee Initiates 2026 Assembly Election Campaign with Strategic Bhowanipore Meeting

In Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to commence her campaign for the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, opting for a targeted approach rather than a large public rally. The campaign will officially begin with a party workers' meeting in the Bhowanipore constituency on Sunday evening, marking a significant shift in strategy as the state gears up for upcoming polls.

Focus on Bhowanipore Amid Voter Roll Revisions

The choice of Bhowanipore as the launchpad is strategic, given recent developments in the voter list. During the roll revision exercise, a substantial number of voters were removed or placed under adjudication. Specifically, 47,111 individuals have been deleted from the constituency's voter list, which originally comprised approximately 200,000 voters. Additionally, 14,154 cases remain under adjudication, pending final decisions on their eligibility.

Trinamool Congress's booth-level agents, who were actively involved in the revision process, have been instructed to attend the meeting at Chetla's Ahindra Manch. This gathering aims to mobilize grassroots support and address concerns related to the voter deletions, which have sparked controversy and legal challenges.

Recalibrated Campaign Strategy and Key Participants

The party has devised a recalibrated strategy for Bhowanipore, emphasizing an intensive, month-long door-to-door campaign. This approach leverages Trinamool's extensive network of ground-level workers to connect directly with voters, particularly in light of the reduced voter list. The campaign slogan, "Unnoyon Ghore Ghore, Ghorer Meye Bhowanipore-e", translates to "Development in Every Home, The Daughter of the House in Bhowanipore", highlighting local engagement and familial ties.

Key leaders will participate in the meeting, including:

  • TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee
  • Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim
  • Party State President Subrata Bakshi
  • South Kolkata District President Debasish Kumar
  • All eight Trinamool councillors representing Bhowanipore

Their involvement underscores the importance of this constituency in the broader electoral landscape.

CM's Public Statements and Legal Actions

Ahead of the campaign launch, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep concern over the voter roll issues via a post on X (formerly Twitter). She stated, "I remain deeply concerned about the ongoing challenges faced by many citizens regarding their rightful place in electoral rolls. I have approached the appropriate legal forums, including the Hon'ble courts, with the hope that the constitutional rights of every individual will be protected."

Banerjee further emphasized her commitment to unity and inclusiveness, adding, "I want to assure the people of Bengal that I stand with each one of you, across all religions, castes and communities, as a member of your family. At a time when divisive forces seek to fracture our social fabric, we must remain committed to unity and mutual respect. Bengal has always stood as a beacon of inclusiveness, where every faith is honoured and every voice matters."

Upcoming Campaign Trail and Broader Electoral Plans

Following the Bhowanipore meeting, Mamata Banerjee will expand her campaign to north Bengal. On Tuesday, she is scheduled to address at least three public meetings at Alipurduar Parade Ground, Matigara, and Maynaguri. These regions are critical as all north Bengal districts are set to vote on April 23, making early outreach essential for electoral success.

Simultaneously, Abhishek Banerjee will embark on his own campaign trail starting March 24 from South 24 Parganas. According to the Trinamool Congress's announced schedule, he will criss-cross the state for seven days, covering both north and south Bengal. This coordinated effort aims to maximize reach and reinforce the party's presence across diverse regions.

The Bhowanipore constituency itself will go to polls on April 29, adding urgency to the current mobilization efforts. The combination of voter list challenges and a focused door-to-door campaign reflects Trinamool's adaptive strategy in a competitive political environment.
