Mamata's helicopter grounded, blames BJP for confrontation

Mamata's Travel Woes Spark Political Firestorm

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday after being unable to use her designated helicopter to reach a political rally in Bongaon. The incident occurred when the aircraft's insurance was found to have lapsed, preventing it from taking off.

Banerjee eventually traveled by road to address her gathering in North 24 Parganas district, later leading a padayatra in the Matua-dominated region. The state transport department has since issued a show-cause notice to the private company that provided the aircraft on lease.

"Elections Yet to Begin, But Confrontation Starts"

Addressing the delayed gathering, Banerjee began with an apology for her late arrival. "A funny thing happened today. First, I apologise for being late," the Chief Minister told her supporters. She explained that while she typically travels by car, her government had arranged a helicopter for this particular event.

"I use the helicopter once every seven or eight months. I mostly travel by car. But our government has taken a helicopter on rent," Banerjee stated. "This morning, while I was about to leave my house, I heard I cannot fly in the helicopter. I was supposed to leave by 11 am and reach here by 12.30."

The Trinamool Congress leader didn't mince words when pointing fingers at the opposition. "Elections are yet to begin, but confrontation starts," she declared, directly accusing the BJP of initiating early political hostilities.

Silver Lining in Road Journey

Despite the inconvenience, Banerjee found a positive aspect in her unexpected road trip. "But while I was coming on the road, I met so many people. I made stops and met people. What better way to reach out to people?" she remarked, turning the situation into an opportunity for greater public interaction.

The Chief Minister also issued a warning to her political opponents: "I repeatedly tell BJP, please don't play games with me. When I play the game, you will have no clue. You will not understand when I play my game."

Transport Department Takes Action

According to state transport department officials, the leased helicopter was supposed to be fully maintained by the private company under their contract. A senior official explained that the company was contractually obligated to provide a replacement in case of malfunction or any other issue.

"We do not know why the insurance was not renewed in time. The company was responsible and has been show-caused," the official stated, confirming that the private aviation firm now faces disciplinary action for the oversight.

Broader Political Context

At the rally, Banerjee also targeted the Election Commission and the BJP over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bengal. She alleged that the voter list revision was being rushed ahead of the Assembly polls, promising to ensure that "not one genuine voter's name is cancelled" during the process.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with parties already positioning themselves for upcoming electoral battles. Banerjee's allegations of early confrontation signal what could be a particularly heated election season in the state, even though formal election proceedings have yet to commence.

The Chief Minister's ability to turn an unexpected travel disruption into a political narrative demonstrates her characteristic combative style, while the administrative response highlights the ongoing tensions between state machinery and private service providers in political contexts.
