Tragic Suicide in West Bengal Linked to Electoral Roll Dispute
A 36-year-old man has allegedly taken his own life in Baduria, North 24-Parganas district, West Bengal, following the placement of his name under the "adjudication" category in the final electoral rolls. The incident occurred on Thursday, with family members reporting that Ismail Molla was under severe mental stress due to the situation.
Family Details Mental Anguish Before the Tragedy
Relatives of Ismail Molla from Paschim Natunria stated that he was found hanging inside a locked room on Thursday morning. According to Arman Akandi, a family member, Molla had expressed deep anxiety the previous night after returning from the mosque.
"Even on Wednesday night, after returning from the mosque, he was expressing deep anxiety and repeatedly said he would end his life if the issue was not resolved. We never imagined he would act on it so soon," Akandi recounted.
Police Investigation and Post-Mortem Procedures
Local police responded to the scene and initially transported the body to Rudrapur Hospital. It was later shifted to Basirhat District Hospital, where a post-mortem examination was conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Following the examination, the body was handed over to the grieving family for last rites.
Context of Electoral Roll Adjudication Process
The incident highlights the emotional toll of electoral processes, as the first supplementary voter list under the Summary Revision (SIR) process is expected to be published on Friday. Adjudication in electoral rolls typically involves verifying voter eligibility when objections or discrepancies arise, a process that can cause significant distress for individuals involved.
This tragic event underscores the importance of mental health support during administrative procedures that impact personal status and rights. Authorities have not yet commented on whether the electoral roll issue directly contributed to the suicide, but the family's statements point to a clear connection in their view.
