Tragic Drowning in Ranchi Pond During Funeral Rituals

The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Kumar, a resident of the Chatakpur area in Ranchi. According to police reports, Kumar had visited the pond early in the morning to carry out traditional funeral rites for a family member, a common practice in many cultures.
Details of the Drowning Incident
Kotwali police station officer in-charge Sanoj Kumar Choudhary provided crucial details about the tragedy. He stated that the victim, after completing the rituals, decided to swim in the pond. "As he started swimming, he didn't realise he had gone into the deep waters and drowned," Choudhary explained, emphasizing how quickly such accidents can occur even in familiar settings.
NDRF and Police Response
Upon receiving information about the drowning, local authorities sprang into action:
- A police team immediately visited the spot to assess the situation and begin preliminary investigations.
- Recognizing the need for specialized assistance, they called in a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team to handle the recovery operation.
- The NDRF team reached Hatnia pond at approximately 1:30 pm, bringing with them trained divers and necessary equipment for underwater search operations.
Recovery Operation and Aftermath
The recovery operation proved challenging and time-consuming:
- An NDRF diver entered the pond to search for the victim's body in the deep waters where Kumar had reportedly drowned.
- After extensive efforts, the diver successfully recovered Rakesh Kumar's body from the pond.
- The entire operation lasted approximately two and a half hours, demonstrating the complexity of underwater recovery missions even in relatively small water bodies.
Police officials confirmed that the body has been sent for postmortem examination as part of standard procedure.
